history

Territorial history

Reconstruction of a pigsty from Oberkalbach in the Hessenpark in Neu-Anspach

The oldest surviving documentary mention of the village comes from the year 1167. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the Brandenstein office , but the neighboring Mittelkalbach belonged to the Neuhof office of the Fulda monastery . Since 1316, the office of Brandenstein was given as a fiefdom of the Bishop of Würzburg to the Hanau rulership , later the Hanau-Münzenberg county . The County of Hanau-Münzenberg was finally reformed during the Reformation , including Oberkalbach. In 1717, Hanau pledged it to the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel for a loan of 100,000 guilders and never redeemed it. Since then, Oberkalbach has been administered as part of the Landgraviate.

In 1803 the Landgraviate was elevated to the status of the Electorate of Hesse . During the Napoleonic period, the Office of Brandenstein and thus also Oberkalbach was under French military administration from 1806, belonged to the Principality of Hanau from 1807 to 1810 and to the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt from 1810 to 1813 . Then it fell back to the Electorate of Hesse. After the administrative reform of the Electorate of Hesse in 1821, during which the Electorate of Hesse was divided into four provinces and 22 districts, the Brandenstein office was merged into the newly formed Schlüchtern district , where it remained until 1972.

Territorial reform

In the course of the regional reform in Hesse on August 1, 1972 Oberkalbach was assigned a district of the large municipality of Kalbach and at the same time to the district of Fulda by virtue of state law .
