Nduka Odizor (born August 9, 1958 in Lagos ) is a retired Nigerian tennis player .

Life

Odizor grew up in Nigeria and was discovered by Robert Wren at the age of 15. This funded him to study at the University of Houston . He was named three times in the All-American selection and was named Athlete of the Year by his university in 1981. In the same year he stood in both singles and doubles in the semifinals of the NCAA championships. He graduated with a degree in marketing and became a professional tennis player in the early 1980s.

In 1982 he won the Challenger Tournament in Tokyo , he was also in the final of the Challenger Tournament in Benin City . The following year he was able to win his only individual title on the ATP World Tour in Taipei . In the same year he won his first double title at the side of Van Winitsky in Dallas . As a result, he played successfully for several years with David Dowlen , together they won four double titles and were four more times in a final. After a very successful year on the ATP World Tour 1985 with a double title and a semi-final participation in singles, several years followed in which Oduke mainly played on the Challenger Tour. In 1986 he won again the Challenger tournament in Benin City, as well as the single and double titles of Lagos . After further single and double titles in the following years, he won two more titles on the ATP World Tour in 1990.

In total, Odizor won seven double titles in the course of his career, five more times he was in a double final. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1984 with position 52 in singles and position 20 in doubles.

His best individual result at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon in 1983. His best result in the doubles competition was the quarter-finals at the US Open in the same year.

Odizor played 22 singles and eleven doubles games for the Nigerian Davis Cup team between 1986 and 1993 . During this time, Nigeria was never able to qualify for the world group. In 1988 Nigeria met Austria in the Europe group , in the 5-0 defeat Odizor lost to both Horst Skoff and Thomas Muster . At the 1988 Summer Olympics , he competed in singles and doubles for Nigeria. He was defeated in the first round by Robert Seguso and also in doubles at the side of Tony Mmoh in the first round against the French Guy Forget and Henri Leconte .

Odizor lives in Houston , Texas . He is married and has a son.
