The Oldsmobile 60 , also known as the Oldsmobile F-Series like its predecessor , was an upper middle class passenger car that was built from 1939 to 1948 by Oldsmobile , a General Motors brand . It was the brand's entry-level model.

Production history

In the first year of production of the 60 a side-valve in-line six-cylinder engine with 3523 cc capacity, the at 3400 min had -1 developed 90 bhp (67.1 kW). Compared to its predecessor, the belt line was a little lower and the front fenders curved more elegantly. In addition to the main grille under the alligator hood, the Oldsmobile sported 60 small side grills under the headlights. It was available as a two- or four-door hatchback sedan with five seats or as a two-door club or business coupé with three seats.

In the following year, the name F-Series was dropped and the 60 was nicknamed Special . It now also had the larger engine of the 70 series with 3769 cc and 95 bhp (70.8 kW) power. The superstructures were 9 ″ (225 mm) longer than the predecessor and were a bit rounder. In addition to the above-mentioned bodies, there was now also a 2-door convertible and a 5-door station wagon.

In 1941 the cars increased in size again and, like the 70, got the even larger engine with 3900 cm³ displacement and 100 bhp (74.6 kW). In these larger cars, the eight-cylinder engine from the fitted model 90 with 4211 cc and 110 hp (82 kW) at 3400 min -1 . In 1942 a notchback sedan with 4 doors was added and the radiator grille showed a wide, horizontal chrome clasp. The models were named 66 or 68 , depending on the engine equipment . On February 5, 1942, production was stopped due to the war.

In 1946, the pre-war series 60 was reissued, but initially only with the six-cylinder engine as a two- and four-door hatchback sedan, four-door notchback sedan, two-door convertible and five-door station wagon. Only the radiator grille had changed and consisted of four horizontal chrome bars that led down to the bumper below the headlights that were integrated into the fenders. The rear and front bumpers were drawn around the vehicle corners to the wheel wells. The nickname Special was also used again.

From 1947 the well-known eight-cylinder engine and a convertible as well as a station wagon were also available on request. The two-door sedan was replaced by a coupe of the same type. In 1948, the last year of production, there were few changes. Only the epithet Special has been replaced by Dynamic , as with the 70 .

The following year the 76 replaced the 60 as an entry-level model.

Made in Australia

The Oldsmobile 60 was also manufactured by General Motors-Holden’s in Australia from 1946–1948 , where it was sold as the Oldsmobile Ace . The cars were fitted with Australian bodies and were completely different from the American-made Oldsmobile 60. They were the last GM models with rear-hinged doors .
