The top favorite was the 1952 Olympic champion and world record holder Adhemar Ferreira da Silva from Brazil. The silver medalist from 1952, Leonid Shcherbakov from the USSR, like the Japanese Teruji Kogake, was one of the favorites.
A sensation, however, was the silver medal of the Icelandic Vilhjálmur Einarsson, who was able to challenge the Brazilian and was even in the lead after the first three rounds. Da Silva then improved in his fourth attempt to the new Olympic record width of 16.35 m and exceeded Einarsson by nine centimeters. That was the decision, da Silva repeated his Olympic victory from Helsinki . The bronze medal of Witold Krejer, a fellow Shcherbakov, who came in sixth, was just as unexpected.
Adhemar Ferreira da Silva was the second triple jumper after Myer Prinstein - gold medalist in 1900 and 1904 - to repeat his Olympic victory. Vilhjálmur Einarsson won the first ever Olympic medal for Iceland.
