final
Date: September 8, 1960, 3:30 p.m.
13 participants had reached the qualification range. The favorites of the competition, world record holder Al Cantello from the USA and the Pole Janusz Sidło did not manage in the final. Cantello was only tenth, Sidło eighth. Sidło, who had repeatedly presented himself as a consistent and reliable thrower in the past, achieved an excellent 85.14 m in qualification, which would have been enough for the gold medal in the final. The US American Bill Alley, who threw 86.46 m in an exhibition match, could not find his form and was already stuck in the qualification. The same fate befell the 1956 Olympic champion Egil Danielsen from Norway.
The medals were awarded after the first attempt, none of the athletes in the first four places could improve their distance. The majority of the other throwers also achieved the best result in the first round. This was due to the wind conditions on that day. Immediately after the first round, gusty winds came up that made throwing difficult for the athletes. So if you, like co-favorite Sidło, couldn't show off with the first litter, you hardly had a chance to move forward later. The sometimes very surprising placements are understandable. The Soviet athlete Wiktor Zybulenko won by over five meters over the silver medalist Walter Krüger from Germany. A little more than a meter further back, the Hungarian Gergely Kulcsár won bronze.
Viktor Zybulenko achieved the first Soviet Olympic victory in the javelin throw .
