1976 Summer Olympics / Participant (Thailand)

The Thai team participated in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Canadian Montreal with a delegation of 42 athletes - three women and 39 men - in 33 competitions in eleven sports part.

The only medal winner - and thus the first ever Olympic medal for a Thai athlete - was the boxer Phayao Phoontharat (bronze).

  • Quarter-finals: 4-1 win against György Gedó from Hungary , 1972 Olympic champion.
  • In the semifinals Poontarat lost prematurely to North Koreans Li Byong-uk .

• Somchai Putapibarn : 0-5 defeat in the first round against South Korean Kim Jeong-cheol .

  • In the quarterfinals, Saturngrun lost 5-0 to the eventual Olympic champion Gu Yong-ju from North Korea .
