African / European qualifying tournament
The first quota place was awarded at a qualifying tournament for Africa and Europe, which was held in Parma and Bologna from September 18 to 22, 2019. The five best teams from the 2019 European Championships and the 2019 African champions took part in this tournament . The tournament was a round-robin tournament in which the Israeli national baseball team qualified as winners for the Olympic Games. The Dutch team has the opportunity to qualify as second place at the International Animal qualifying tournament in 2020 for the games. The following nations took part in this tournament:

WBSC Premier 12 2019
The 12 best teams in the world rankings as of the end of 2018 competed at WBSC Premier12 2019 . Only teams from America, Asia and Oceania were able to qualify for the Olympic Games through this tournament. Mexico received a quota place as the best American nation. South Korea, as the best team from Asia and Oceania, also got a quota place. If no team from Asia or Oceania had finished the tournament among the top six nations, the international qualifying tournament in April 2020 would have been expanded by one place. American qualifying tournament
The six teams that could not qualify through the WBSC Premier12 2019 will take part in the American qualifying tournament. The field of participants is complemented by the two best teams of the Pan American Games 2019 that did not qualify for the WBSC Premier12 2019. The tournament was originally supposed to take place in Arizona from March 22nd to 26th, 2020 , but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The winner of the tournament receives a quota place, the second and third placed teams have another opportunity to qualify for the games through the international qualifying tournament.
International qualification tournament
The international qualifying tournament is the last chance to secure a place for the games. It was originally supposed to take place in the Taiwanese cities of Taichung and Douliu from April 1st to 5th, 2020 . However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the tournament was postponed. A total of six teams will take part in this tournament. The runner-up of the African / European and the second and third of the American qualifying tournament take part. The finalists of the 2019 Asian Cup and the winner of an Oceania qualifying tournament will receive two more places .
If no team from Asia / Oceania had made it into the top six nations of the WBSC Premier 12 2019 , two places would have been awarded at this tournament. However, only the winner receives one.
