Two handball competitions are to be held at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo . Twelve teams each take part in the tournament for women and men. The venue is the Kokuritsu Yoyogi Kyōgijō , which can seat 12,000 spectators. There will be 336 athletes taking part in the competitions, twelve teams of each gender with 14 players each.

The following sequence was planned for the games in summer 2020. The exact schedule for 2021 has not yet been set.

Men's tournament
qualification
Qualified for the Olympic tournament are the 2019 world champions and the four winners of the continental championships that will be held between 2019 and 2020. (Asia and Oceania together form a continental association). Japan is automatically qualified to host.
The last opportunity to qualify is three tournaments in 2020, in which two teams qualify. Four teams will take part in each of these tournaments, the places will be awarded after the performance at the World and Continental Championships. The six best teams in the World Cup that have not yet qualified for the Olympic tournament take part. There are also two teams each from Europe and Asia as well as one team from America and Africa.
