30 participants from 13 countries, 23 of them in the rating. Retired u. a .: Hans Rinn (GDR), Markus Kägi (SUI), Ueli Schenkel (SUI).

After two runs, Dettlef Günther, who had set a track record, was ahead of Ernst Haspinger and Dainis Bremze (Latvia, then still URS). Sandbichler was the best Austrian in 9th place, followed by Wilhelmer and Albert Graf. After the first run, the medal chances for all Austrian participants were gone. In addition, the Swiss Kägi and Schenkel and the South Tyrolean Karl Brunner dropped out due to falls, but Günther (who, however, came fourth in the top ranking) and the leading Haspinger after three runs as well as Bremze and Hans Rinn were affected. The two Austrian sledges ranked well above expectations.

Date: February 19, 1980, 2:00 p.m. (1st run), 3:00 p.m. (2nd run)

19 teams from 12 countries, all in the ranking.

The Austrian bronze medal winners were only known to insiders up to this point, even though they finished second in the 1979 World Cup. They were real amateurs. The budget of the FRG tobogganists was estimated at around 1.29 million DM, that of the Italians (practically it was South Tyroleans - and they were connected to the ski pool) was estimated at two thirds of this amount. In contrast, the Austrian budget looked negligibly small at 700,000 schillings (around 100,000 DM). It was known from the GDR tobogganers that they had been training in Oberhof since August 25th (the bobsleigh and toboggan run in Igls was only available since November 5th).
