Ondarroa ( Castilian Ondárroa ) is a municipality in the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country Autonomous Community in Spain . It is located about 40 km east of the provincial capital Bilbao at the mouth of the Artibai River in the Bay of Biscay .

history

On September 28, 1327, María Díaz de Haro, mistress of Biscaya , granted Ondarroa town charter in Estella ( Navarra ). Like the other cities of the Vizcaya, the new town received the Fuero of Logroño . María's successor Juan Núñez de Lara and his wife María Díaz II de Haro confirmed the foundation in 1335 and provided the funds for the construction of the city wall.

King Alfonso XI communicated a little later Rentería de Aramaio and confessed to the place the income from the bridge toll of the wooden bridge over the Artibai. The bridge was later replaced by today's Puente Viejo .

In 1351 the place united with Bilbao , Plencia and Lekeitio in a league against the English who had occupied Bayonne and Biarritz . The subsequent peace treaty was signed on December 21, 1353 in Hondarribia .

Henry IV of Castile granted Ondarroa privileges for services rendered to the crown and supported the reconstruction after the fire in 1463.

In the time of King Philip II , trade was so important to the city that it had fifty ships. In addition, shipbuilding was an important branch of business and remained so until the second half of the twentieth century.

In 1638 Ondarroa, together with other places, successfully stood by the side of San Sebastián, which was enclosed by the French , but suffered pillage and pillage by the French army in the Pyrenees War of 1793–1795.

economy

For centuries the place was a center of fishing and whaling , as the whale depicted in the coat of arms testifies to. Fishing continues to be of great importance. The fishing fleet based in Ondarroa comprised 38 vessels in 2007, including 30 for deep-sea fishing , making it the second largest in the Spanish Basque Country after that of Bermeo . The Arrigorri bathing beach is located next to the harbor .

politics

Ondarroa is considered to be the stronghold of the radical Basque nationalists who strive for an independent Basque state. Before the 2007 local elections, the Spanish Supreme Court banned the Acción Nacionalista Vasca (ANV) from running because several candidates were linked to the Batasuna party ; this had been banned because of their support for the terrorist organization ETA . ANV then called for an election boycott.

In the election on May 27, 2007, 4,833 votes were cast (63.84% of those eligible to vote). However, these included 2,195 invalid and 81 blank ballot papers. The moderate nationalist EAJ-PNV was the strongest force with 1,720 votes (65.2% of the validly cast votes) and received 9 of the 13 seats in the municipal council. The remaining seats were held by Eusko Alkartasuna (EA) (2), Ezker Batua (EB, regional section of the Izquierda Unida ) and Partido Popular (PP) (1 each). After threats from radical nationalists who claimed the invalid votes for ANV, most elected local councils gave up their seats; only the municipal council of the PP appeared at the constituent meeting.

The provincial administration of Bizkaia then set up a management commission (Comisión Gestora Municipal) chaired by the former mayor Félix Aranbarri Urizarbarrena (EAJ-PNV), who has been responsible for the administration of the municipality since then. For security reasons, their meetings are closed to the public in Bilbao , with the exception of the chairman, the members live outside the community. The chairman and his family receive threats from radical nationalists; his private car was destroyed in an arson attack.
