Easter Oratorio (Stenov)
Resurrection op. 73 is a synoptic Easter oratorio for solos , mixed choir and orchestra by Michael Stenov .
Work history
In 1997 Michael Stenov created without musical intention, solely out of an interest in the HL. Scripture , a synopsis from all four Gospels , in order to obtain a unified life and impact history of Jesus ( Gospel harmony ). Only later did he realize that the Christmas story and the story of the resurrection had never been set to music in the detail of the Gospel text. After Stenov took the first step in 2011 with the Christmas Oratorio , the preparatory work for the Easter Oratorio followed.
In the period from May 23 to June 19, 2017, Stenov set the text consisting of 100 numbers to music.
On May 5, 2018, before the world premiere, the work for the production of video and audio carriers was recorded at the location of the premiere.
The world premiere then took place on May 10, 2018 as part of a benefit event for “ Church in Need ” in the parish church of St. Peter in Linz / Spallerhof. Even before the premiere, the composer received the “Honorable Mention” award at the 3rd International Ravel Composition Competition in category C.

Work description
In order to make it easier to perform, Stenov has significantly reduced the orchestral line-up compared to his Christmas Oratorio. In addition to the strings and the organ, there are only two trumpets and timpani, two oboes (English horns), which are only played alternately, and two bassoons, of which one musician also plays the contrabassoon.
The oratorio with a total length of about 110 minutes should be performed as a whole or - if necessary - in two parts with a break after chorale No. 53. It is planned that the concert-goers sing along with the chorals.
The work comprises 100 individual numbers in 9 sections and is divided into choirs, solo pieces, ensembles, recitatives and chorales, the texts of which - similar to the Christmas Oratorio - are largely based on the biblical texts, with musical symbolism being unmistakable. The insertion of the choirs and chorales in suitable places results in a varied and colorful picture. Certain instruments are assigned to the people involved and the instrumentation , timbres and keys are tailored to the characters of the people or the text passages. For example, Jesus is accompanied by a string quintet and organ, the Evangelist by cello and organ, and Mary Magdalene by oboes, bassoon and organ.
