Otto Ludwig Leopold von Erxleben (born January 3, 1788 in Selbelang , † January 29, 1856 ) was a German officer and landowner.

Life

Otto Ludwig Leopold von Erxleben came from the ancient nobility of Erxleben in the Altmark and was born as the son of Otto Friedrich von Erxleben (* 1751; † unknown), captain and heir and court lord on Selbelang and his wife Johanne Gottliebe, née. von Schlieben, born.

He was initially taught by private tutors and came to the Brandenburg Knight Academy in 1799 . He began his military career in 1805 as a cornet with the Leib-Carabinier-Regiment , a cuirassier regiment that was then stationed in Rathenow , Genthin , Neuhaldensleben , Havelberg and Sandau . After the Fourth Coalition War against Napoleon , he returned to his father's house as a lieutenant in 1806 and, due to the development of political conditions, renounced his further military career. At first he devoted himself to the administration of his father's property and was introduced on November 6, 1808, as a result of his father's resignation , in an extraordinary chapter as Canon of Brandenburg.

In 1810 he took over his father's inheritance and managed it.

In 1813 he returned to military service and, as prime lieutenant, led the 3rd squadron of the 5th Landwehr- Uhlan Regiment, which mainly consisted of soldiers from his estates; During this time he had the opportunity to distinguish himself from General Friedrich Ludwig Wilhelm Otto Gans zu Putlitz , Friedrich August Ludwig von der Marwitz and Karl Friedrich von Hirschfeld . Otto Ludwig Leopold von Erxleben stood out for two actions: on the one hand, he attacked a French field guard standing in the outer areas of Magdeburg , captured the crew and nailed two cannons, for which he was one of the first Landwehr men to receive the Iron Cross . On the other hand, on August 24, 1813, with thirty riders from his squadron from Brandenburg, he took a 120-strong French infantry detachment near the village of Zitz by surprise , forced them to lay down their weapons and took them prisoner. The French company flag, as well as the sword and the ring collar of the French captain were hung up in memory in the St. Nikolai church in Selbelang. In March 1814 he was promoted to Rittmeister and as such, after the peace treaty, he retired from active service and devoted himself again to the management of his property.

In January 1817, through the resignation of the Major von Werder, he received a major prebend in Brandenburg and thus became a member of the cathedral chapter , as its representative he took part in the municipal council of the Kurmark for many years from 1824 , during which time he also practiced this for several years Office of the chairman.

In 1830 he was promoted to major .

In 1833 he acquired the von Bardeleben property and the Selbelang goods were now united in one hand.

On September 30, 1837 he was elected as canon after the cathedral dean Wilhelm Ludwig Viktor Henckel von Donnersmarck resigned from the cathedral chapter as dean of the bishopric of Brandenburg ; this was confirmed by the royal cabinet ordinance of October 12, 1837.

During the reestablishment of the Brandenburg Balley of the Order of St. John, he joined the Brandenburg Provincial Cooperative of the Knightly Order and donated a large amount for the Order's hospital in Jüterbog.

In 1810 he married Wilhelmine Henriette Agnese (* October 15, 1791; † November 9, 1852), eldest daughter of General Friedrich Wilhelm von Werder . Together they had three daughters and one son:

  • Agnes von Erxleben, married to the higher regional judge von Schlieben († 1849) in Magdeburg;
