Otto von Bismarck (* 1959 as Ottmar Seum in Alsfeld ) is a German singer and lyricist.

Life

Ottmar Seum dropped out of school in 1975 to found the band Grabhund with Hans Riffer, Rainer Theobald, Harald Gnade and Dieter Steinmann . In 1979 they moved to Frankfurt a. M. , where two years later her first LP Grabhund ABC was released at Zweiausendeins . Two concerts in 1982 with the American group Defunkt and Zatopek in the Metropol Theater and Ballhaus Tiergarten in Berlin marked the climax and at the same time the end of the formation.

Seum founded the Forbach SA collective in 1983 - with Hans Dieter Richardt and Faldon B. Wald, Robert Janitz, Hans-Jürgen Roth, Enno Maus u. a. - who played musique concrète , fluxus and punk - a musical practice from which Seum drew again and again in the following.

In the same year he finally moved to Berlin. Together with Borries von dem Bussche, drummer with Zatopek and Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh , various video and sound works were created. In 1984 she met at the Café Swing on Caspar Brötzmann . They formed the band The Bonkers and toured Europe.

Seum toured Germany , Austria and Switzerland with Turbo Hi Dramatics , a New York punk band .

In 1985, the Space Cowboys formed out of the close friendship between Alfred Mommertz, Borries von dem Bussche and Seum - alias Apollo Jones, Bishop and Legion Mars - and The Chip Rainer Matthias in the vicinity of the fish office . At Dimitri Hegemann's Berlin Atonal Festival , they stood in for the British Top Act Test Department . The audience was divided: Teutonic gay disco meets noise, melodies and a martial show. Shortly thereafter they recorded their first EP Without You . Singer and front man Mommertz left the band for personal reasons, Seum took over as front man and called himself Otto von Bismarck from now on. With the costumes of the newly added Danielle de Picciotto and the breakneck stage diving of Mike Vamp , they advanced to one of the best German live bands.

They signed with Rough Trade Records / Our Choice , a collaboration that lasted until 1993. With the next three records (Maxi Too high ; CD / LP Locked n Loaded , single release You got me goin ' ), produced by David Harrow , they reached an international audience. This was followed by a tour of the Netherlands and concert tours at home and abroad. Tensions with the record company led to the breakup and a deal with the USSR label from KP Schleinitz, the manager of the band Alphaville . With the EP Terrorist in their luggage, produced by Danny Saber and Jamie Rose , the Space Cowboys traveled to SxSW in Austin , Texas (1994). Shortly afterwards, the band broke up for personal reasons.

Bismarck now turned intensely to songwriting. He began a series of solo concerts in 1998. He appeared as a guest at Moritz Wolpert and The Screaming Meat in the Lore-Bar, in the Oxymoron in Berlin-Mitte and in the trumpet on Lützowplatz , with u. a .: Yoyo Röhm , Bruno Adams , Jamie Klimek, Kristof Hahn, Ben Becker , Bobo, Martin Dean , Alexander Hacke and Meret Becker .

With his own formations Pony with Friedel Kriete and the Ultramarine Festival Band with Sebastian Krajewski , Bismarck performed for example. B. with Calvin Russell in the Berlin Loft or in their own Vocalion Club in Kato at Schlesisches Tor .

In 2000 he worked again with Caspar Brötzmann . They recorded the record Mute Massacre and played a New Year's Eve concert in Nantes , at which Caspar's father Peter Brötzmann joined them. Bismarck wrote the song Soulman for Marian Gold's solo album and toured with Alphaville as a band member.

In 2002 Bismarck met Yelka Wehmeyer, a short time later Daniel Nentwig and Sebastian Maschat , a younger generation of musicians. They founded Two Chix and a Beer and worked together very productively for the next ten years.

They played concerts in England and Germany and released numerous albums. The song The Easiest Rider was interpreted in 2007 by Alexander Scheer in the film Das wilde Leben . In 2009, on the occasion of his 50th birthday, Bismarck's bandmates surprised Bismarck with a marching band, sedan parade around the Kottbusser Tor and a musical review by friends and companions in the Kreuzberg ballroom, with Too Far Gone, Adrian vom Hove, Danny Bruder , Jan Oputschinsky, Olivia Stahn, Nathan Vanderpool, Sebastian Krajewski, Arne Neumann, Alexander Scheer, Rainer Theobald u. a. The last album was Friends of Dolores on Butterama in 2010, before the band went their separate ways in 2013.

Bismarck performed with Sebastian Maschat as Zwei Tote Deutsche . Musique Conrète and Fluxus came back to the fore. He played concerts with Daniel Nentwig (bass, vocals) and Robert Kretzschmar (drums) in Bayreuth , Jena and Berlin. In 2017, Bismarck began working on the first solo album with Daniel Nentwig in his Butterama studio.
