The 61-year-old Pope looks back on his life in the Gemelli Clinic in Rome . His love for the priestly profession was shown early on - but Karol Wojtyła also wanted to be an actor .

When the Germans occupied Krakow in 1939 , Governor General Hans Frank Cardinal Sapieha forbade the ordination of priests and the celebration of church services. Nevertheless, Karol can conduct his studies in secret, even though he has to work in a quarry for the occupiers. He also works secretly for the resistance - but rejects all violence.

With the help of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński , Karol becomes Archbishop of Krakow and takes part in the 2nd Vatican Council .

Wyszyński and the influential Austrian Cardinal König finally succeeded in getting Karol Wojtyła elected Pope in 1978 - and now calling himself John Paul II .

27 years of pontificate lie ahead of him, during which the Polish Pope will visit his homeland, Poland, support the Solidarność trade union and thereby participate in the fall of communism.

Difficult times fall during his tenure, including the Second Gulf War , September 11, 2001, and the Iraq War .
