Patrick Sammie Mills (born August 11, 1988 in Canberra , Australian Capital Territory ) is an Australian basketball player . The 1.83 meter tall point guard has been active for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA since 2012 . His father comes from the Torres Strait Islanders , his mother is from the Aborigines , and through his father he is related to the two-time Olympic basketball player Danny Morseu.

Career

After his time at the Australian Institute of Sport , Mills played for the team at Saint Mary's College in California from 2007 to 2009. In the 2009 NBA Draft , he was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers . They took him under contract, but after a fracture in his metatarsus during the season preparation they gave him in the meantime to Idaho Stampede in the NBA D-League . In his first season for the Blazers, Mills completed only ten regular season games and three play-off games, while he was used much more often in the following season .

Due to the lockout in the NBA, Mills played in 2011 for some time in the NBL for the Melbourne Tigers. At the end of the year he moved to the CBA in China, where he was dismissed by the Xinjiang Flying Tigers after only a short time in a dispute over the treatment of a muscle injury.

In March 2012 he was signed by the San Antonio Spurs . After the team had been slightly inferior to the Miami Heat in the final series the year before , Mills won the championship with the Spurs in 2014.

National team

Mills played for the Australian national team for the first time in 2007 and was called up for the 2008 Olympic Games , where he was surprisingly the best point collector of his team. He also took part in the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 Olympic Games .
