youth
Per Ciljan Skjelbred began his career in his hometown Trondheim with the small club Trygg / Lade . He became known early on in Norway when he was selected by TV3 to take part in a competition to find the greatest Norwegian football talent. Skjelbred won the competition and the associated main prize, a one-week trial at Liverpool FC . In this he was able to leave a lasting impression, whereupon he was offered a youth contract from Liverpool. However, Skjelbred turned down this contract and instead decided to sign a professional contract with Rosenborg BK .
Rosenborg Trondheim
On June 9, 2004, he made his debut at the age of 16 for Rosenborg in the Tippeligaen . This season he only completed one more game due to the strong competition in midfield. In 2005 he became a regular for Rosenborg. On May 22, 2005 he received a red card as the youngest player of all time in the Tippeligaen .
After he had scored a goal in the first game of the 2005/06 Champions League season against Olympiacos , a man- stick was parked for him for the second leg in Trondheim with Ieroklis Stoltidis . This fouled him so badly in the sixth minute of the game that Skjelbred suffered a broken tibia and fibula. Stolditis only received a yellow card for the foul. Skjelbred was out for six months and was only able to play again on March 10, 2006 in the league game against Aalesunds FK .
Through further short assignments, he became a regular player again and subsequently a high performer at Rosenborg.
In the summer of 2008, Skjelbred's move to Newcastle United seemed already certain. But it didn't come to that, as the then Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan withdrew the offer one day before the transfer window was over. Due to the short-term cancellation of Newcastle, there was no change from Skjelbred in the transfer period for the 2008/09 season, after which he continued his career at Rosenborg.
In Norway, it was long considered the country's greatest hope for the future.
Skjelbred in the Bundesliga
For the 2011/12 season, the German Bundesliga club Hamburger SV Skjelbred signed. He was originally supposed to receive a three and a half year contract from January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2015, but an immediate change was then agreed with Rosenborg. He joined HSV on August 4, after Rosenborg played his second leg in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League . Skjelbred made his last game for Rosenborg BK on July 27, 2011, when he played in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round against Viktoria Plzen . In the second leg on August 3, 2011, he was absent due to an injury. One day later he was presented at Hamburger SV.
On September 2, 2013, Skjelbred was loaned to Hertha BSC until the end of the 2013/14 season. In return, Pierre-Michel Lasogga moved to Hamburg on loan. Skjelbred was able to prevail in Berlin. He made 28 Bundesliga appearances - mostly from the start - in which he scored two goals.
For the 2014/15 season Skjelbred initially returned to HSV, where he completed the preparation. He sat on the bench in the first round of the DFB Cup and on matchday one, but was not substituted by coach Mirko Slomka . On September 1, 2014 Skjelbred returned to Hertha BSC. He received a three-year contract, the term of which was extended in August 2016 to June 30, 2019.
After the 2019/20 season , Skjelbred is leaving the club.
Return to Trondheim
On August 1st, 2020, Skjelbred will return to Rosenborg Trondheim. He signed a contract until December 31, 2022.
National team
Skjelbred went through all of Norway's youth selections. He made his A-Team debut on March 28, 2007 under coach Åge Hareide in the European Championship qualifier against Turkey when he came on for Kristofer Hæstad in the 57th minute .
After almost three years without a game, Skjelbred made his comeback against Albania on June 7, 2013 and scored his only international goal four days later against Macedonia . With the national team, he missed qualifying for the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 European Championship . On February 22, 2017, Skjelbred resigned from the Norwegian national team after a total of 43 international matches.
