Petra Lang
Petra Lang (born November 29, 1962 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German opera and concert singer (mezzo-soprano). She is considered an important interpreter of the works of Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler .
Life
Petra Lang completed a violin degree . Then she learned singing with Gertie Charlent at the Academy for Tonkunst in Darmstadt and at the Peter-Cornelius-Conservatory in Mainz . At the same time she attended the opera school with Harro Dicks. Lang took part in master classes with Hans Hotter, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau , Brigitte Fassbaender and Peter Schreier . After completing her studies, Petra Lang was engaged in a master class with Ingrid Bjoner at the opera studio of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich in 1989 after an audition . Lang studied with Ingrid Bjoner until her death in 2006. From 2001 to 2005 she worked with Astrid Varnay on Wagner games.
In 1990 she was engaged by the Theater Basel , sang in 1991 at the Städtische Bühnen Nürnberg and from 1992 to 1995 at the Theater Dortmund . In Dortmund she was able to work on numerous roles in the lyrical mezzo repertoire . In addition, she was Tamiri in Mozart's Il Re Pastore at the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, as Virtu in Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea at the Salzburg Festival , as Fenena in Verdi's Nabucco at the Bregenz Festival and as Flora in La traviata at the Zurich Festival Listen. In the 1994/95 season she turned to Richard Wagner's work and sang her first Waltraute ( Götterdämmerung ) and Fricka ( Das Rheingold , Die Walküre ) in the Dortmunder Ring cycle. From 1995 to 1997 she added the Brangäne ( Tristan and Isolde ), Judith ( Duke Bluebeard's Castle ), Marie ( Wozzeck ) and Eboli ( Don Carlos ) to her repertoire at the Staatstheater Braunschweig under the direction of Brigitte Fassbaender .
Then Petra Lang decided to work as a freelancer and has been singing on the big stages of the world ever since:

At the Bayreuth Festival 2005/2006 Petra Lang sang Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde , in 2011 Ortrud in Lohengrin by Hans Neuenfels and in 2016 and 2017 the role of Isolde .
In addition to her successes on the opera stage, she is an internationally sought-after concert singer, best known for her sensitive interpretation of Gustav Mahler's works . Her repertoire includes Wagner's Wesendonck lieder , Berlioz ' Les nuits d'été , Berg's seven early lieder and the Wozzeck fragments, Schönberg's lieder op.8 and the forest dove in the Gurre lieder, the Iocasta in Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex , and Zemlinsky's Maeterlinck -Cosings, Sibelius, Duparc, Lalo, Strauss Orchestra songs, Beethoven's IX. Symphony and the Missa Solemnis.
She gives concerts with various orchestras under the direction of Claudio Abbado , Pierre Boulez , Semjon Bytschkow , Riccardo Chailly , MW Chung , Colin Davis , Christoph von Dohnányi , Charles Dutoit , Christoph Eschenbach , Iván Fischer , Bernard Haitink , Marek Janowski , Armin Jordan , Philippe Jordan , Zubin Mehta , Riccardo Muti , Jukka-Pekka Saraste , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Leif Segerstam , Simon Rattle , Donald Runnicles , Peter Schneider , Jeffrey Tate , Christian Thielemann , Silvio Varviso and Simone Young .
Her extensive lied repertoire ranges from Franz Schubert to Anton Webern, and she works with pianists Adrian Baianu , Malcolm Martineau , Carmen Piazzini , Maurizio Pollini , Wolfram Rieger , Charles Spencer and Einar Steen-Nøkleberg . Her recitals include Wigmore Hall (London), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) , Schubertiade (Feldkirch), Semperoper (Dresden), La Scala (Milan), Carnegie-Weill Hall (New York), Salle Pleyel (Paris) and at the Edinburgh Festival .
Vocal pedagogy
Petra Lang also works as a singing teacher and has given master classes for the Mahler Society in London (2006), at the Cologne Music Academy (2007), in Münster (2007) and together with Adrian Baianu in Münster (2008) and in London (2009).
