She studied painting there from 1980 to 1986, master class with Gerhard Richter . From 1998–2000 she taught painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . 2000–2001 she was visiting professor at the Art Academy in Karlsruhe . From October 2009 to January 2014 Fries was a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts , where she had previously been a visiting professor since 2007. Since February 2014 she has held a professorship for painting and graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich .

Her work attracted international attention in 1999 at the Venice Biennale , where it was shown by Harald Szeemann as part of the dapertutto ; since then numerous international exhibitions.

Right from the start, Pia Fries questioned the usual notion of the picture as an image in which a reality previously believed to be reflected is reflected in her painting. Although she deals with figuration in her early works, for example in Untitled (Vogel) (1981), she is particularly interested in the intrinsic value of color and its effect. The independence of the color can lead to the dissolution of the motifs. Since the late 1980s, Pia Fries has been working exclusively non-representationally. With the differentiated surface structure of the compactly applied color, which is condensed into layers of color blocks, Fries reflects the color as a material and material of painting. From the early 1990s on, the picture carrier completely covered by layers of paint was replaced by an ever greater differentiation between figure and ground. On the white chalk ground that is now visible, individual picture elements acquire a symbolic character. Through the different processing of the color and the use of different tools for its assignment, the material properties, the sensual and emotional qualities of the color are examined for their iconic possibilities without abandoning abstraction. Since 2000, Pia Fries has been using screen printing as a further pictorial element. The motifs of the screen printing, which on the one hand show objects - such as a shell, an ear - and on the other hand material processed and photographed by the artist - such as lumps of color, tied ribbons, crumpled crepe paper or scraps of fabric - bring an illusionistic moment into the painting. The problem of the technically reproduced image becomes virulent in its importance for painting. However, the use of photomechanical reproduction processes at Pia Fries does not aim at the transparency of the representation and the recognition of what is depicted, but rather reminds us that reproductions can also take on a life of their own and take on a life of their own that detaches them from their reference function.
