Astrid Lindgren's plays

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Astrid Lindgren has written several plays in addition to her books. Some are based on their books, other stories were written just for the theater. Since almost all of Astrid Lindgren's works were staged on the theater stage, this page only deals with the plays whose scripts were also written by Astrid Lindgren. Many of these works were published in Sweden in the books Sex Pjäser för barn och ungdom (1950), Serverat, Ers Majestät! (1955) and Pjäser för barn och ungdom. Other Samlingen (1968) published. Jag vill inte vara splendid

Jag vill inte vara vorktig ( I don't want to be great ) is a play by Astrid Lindgren.

Characters

  • Mrs. Arvidson
  • Barbro Arvidson, the 18 year old daughter of Mrs. Arvidson
  • Marianne Arvidson, Mrs. Arvidson's 20 year old daughter
  • Klas Arvidson, Mrs. Arvidson's 13 year old son
  • Fritiof af Kornick, scientist

action

The sisters Barbro and Marianne live in a small house with their mother and 13 year old brother. The family is poor and can hardly afford anything. Therefore Marianne decides to go to a party and find a rich husband there. Barbro doesn't understand why Marianne desperately wants a rich husband. Other things are more important to her. She also feels that she has been treated unfairly as she has to help with the household while Marianne goes looking for men. Barbro's mother also stands by Marianne. She believes she can also benefit from Marianne's wedding to a rich man.

There is a rune stone in the family garden. That is why scientists often spend the night with the family to research it. Archaeologist Fritiof af Kornick arrives just as Marianne and her mother are attending a party. He wants to research the runestones in the family's garden and had arranged with Mrs. Arvidson that he could stay in her guest room. However, he only meets Barbro. The two talk and get along very well immediately. Since Barbro is not at the party, but works in the house, Fritiof calls this Cinderella. Barbro explains to him that Cinderella doesn't want to go to the festival.

From now on, Barbro assists the scientist in his work. In the evening they sit together on the bench and Fritiof raves about their great eyes. He says that he would never make a lot of money with his scientific work and could not take care of it well. Barbro replies that she never wanted to marry a rich man to finance her. She wanted and still wants to stand on her own two feet. Fritiof says that he is happy to have opportunities with her, even as a very poor man. Klas overhears the two of them and tells his family about the conversation over breakfast. Marianne and her mother don't want Barbro to have a relationship with a poor scientist like Fritiof. Marianne makes fun of Barbro falling in love with such a poor man.

Then suddenly a letter arrives from Lillemor. He writes to Marianne that she has a rich man in the house in Fritiof. He comes from a very wealthy brewery family and owned millions, but chose science. Marianne should use her "chance in life" and grab this man. Marianne decides to make Fritiof fall in love with her. Barbro pretends that she wouldn't mind. However, things are really bad. In the evening, when she actually wants to look at rock carvings with Fritiof, she has a headache. Therefore Marianne accompanies the scientist. She pretends to be interested in the rock carvings.

The next day Barbro is alone in the kitchen while Marianne is out with Fritiof. Klas comes in. He says he cares about his sister. Klas is very fond of her and knows that she has fallen in love with Fridiof. Therefore, Barbro should fight for Fridiof, thinks Klas. However, Barbro explains that he should not interfere, please. She believes that she has no chance with Fridiof anyway, because Marianne always gets what she wants.

One day later, Fritiof spoke to Barbro. He asks why she keeps avoiding him when she was so nice to him at first. Barbro replies that she was just being nice to him as she had to take care of him as a hostess. Now it's Marianne's turn.

A little later, Klas sits down with Fridiof. He lets them know that Barbro is in love with him. He also gives him the letter from Lillemor. So Fridiof learns that Marianne probably wants to marry him because of his money. Nevertheless, he makes her a marriage proposal. She accepts this beaming with joy. A little later, Fridiof explains that he has a rich cousin with the same name. He is also a scientist, but at the same time the owner of a very wealthy brewery. However, Fridiof Marianne could not offer that. When Marianne hears this, she suddenly becomes unsure. She asks for time to decide whether she really wants to marry him. In response to Fridiof's questions, Marianne explains that at first she really only approached him about the money. In the meantime, however, she has fallen in love with him. She always wanted a rich man, but now she can imagine a marriage with him, even without the money. However, she also knew which lifestyle she would have to give up and therefore asked for time to think it over. She also found that while she loved him, he didn't and never would. That's why she doesn't need any more time to think about it. You'll have to learn to fall out of love. Fridiof says that the conversation went very differently than he had imagined and that he is sorry. Finally, Marianne asks if Fridiof loves Barbro, which Barbro replies in the affirmative.

When Marianne leaves the room, Barbro comes in. Fridiof makes this a marriage proposal. She hesitates to accept the marriage proposal. She doesn't want to marry a rich man. She always hated listening to her sister and mother when they talked about rich men. She also fears people might think she married Fritiof just for his money. Finally, she agrees to a wedding. Fritiof now explains to her that he actually doesn't have a lot of money, but only gets his salary from the museum where he works. He tells her about his rich cousin by the same name. Barbro is relieved and tells Fritiof of her plan to become a nurse.

As soon as Snövit marries a prince, Snövit becomes queen of the country and takes over from Queen Sandra. Queen Sandra then has nothing more to report that she absolutely wants to prevent.

One day Prince Gudmund of Burgundy comes to visit. The queen tries to prevent him from falling in love with Snövit. So she hires a magician to turn Snow White into a stupid little girl. Nevertheless, the prince and Snövit fall in love. They even want to get married. Now Queen Sandra only knows one way out. She asks about the hunter and asks to kill this Snövit. When the hunter refuses, the queen threatens to have his entire family, including his children, killed. So the hunter finally goes into the forest with Snövit. Snövit can convince the hunter not to kill any animals there, because the animals are also sad when one of their young or their parents dies. The hunter cannot kill Snövit either. Snövit wants to go back to the castle, but the hunter says she can't go there because otherwise the queen will kill his children. He cannot stay in the forest with her either, since he has to tell the queen about his alleged deed. Therefore, the desperate Snövit remains alone in the forest.

A little later, Snövit comes to a forest house. She goes in, takes something to eat, and goes to bed. In the evening the residents of the house, the seven dwarfs, come back from their work in the copper mine. When they hear Snövit's story, they take it in friendly. However, they warn them to be careful when they are working and not to open the door to anyone.

When the queen learns from her magic mirror that Snövit is still alive and lives with the seven dwarfs, she decides to go there and kill Snövit with her own hands. She asks the magician to turn her into an old man and make her a beautiful apple that is deadly poisonous. Then she makes her way to Snövit. She can convince Snövit to eat the apple, after which it sinks motionless to the ground. Then the queen disappears.

A little later the dwarfs carry Snövit through the forest on a stretcher. Prince Gudmund rides past. He has looked for Snövit everywhere and is horrified when he sees her lying motionless on the stretcher. The prince shakes her and calls for her to wake up. Then Snövit opens her eyes. She lives. The prince and the seven dwarfs are overjoyed. When Snövit tells the prince what happened, he is horrified. He explains that they should ride back to the castle together, since Snövit is now the queen. Queen Sandra has had its day.

Meanwhile, resistance to the queen is rising in the city. People suspect that the queen is responsible for Snovit's disappearance and want to get rid of her. The hunter says that the queen should flee because her people no longer accept her as queen. Just as the queen says that Snovit is dead and that she is therefore the only queen, Snovit rides in with the prince. People cheer Snövit: "Our Queen". While the queen is horrified, the hunter is overjoyed that Snövit is alive. He apologizes for leaving her alone in the forest. Snövit is appointed the new queen while Queen Sandra has to flee the kingdom alone.

background

Astrid Lindgren wrote the play in the 1940s. The script is based on the story of the Brothers Grimm. It was first published in 1950 in the book Sex Pjäser för barn och ungdom . This was published by Rabén & Sjögren. Even 60 years after it was first published, the play is still shown on Swedish theaters. In 2018 Astrid Lindgren-sällskapets published the book Snövit , which contains the play. The play is approximately 90 minutes long. The story was not translated into German.

Astrid Lindgren's first book, Snövit Barnens Julkalender, contained a story about Snow White. Lindgren received the book as a gift in 1911. On the cover there was a picture of Jenny Nyström . Nyström had drawn Snow White. She had long black hair and a small red cap. Astrid Lindgren loved this book and read it over and over again. After all, she learned the stories by heart. Her book inspired Lindgren to write a play about Snövit.

reception

Turun Sanomat praises Astrid Lindgren's play. In contrast to the story of the Brothers Grimm , in which Snow White is depicted as fragile and vulnerable, Snövit is a strong-willed, self-confident woman. She knew exactly what she wanted, namely Prince Gudmund. When the Queen asked her to dress more childlike on her 15th birthday, Snövit demonstratively behaved like a six year old to defy her stepmother. Enough interesting things would happen in the story to keep even the smallest of viewers happy.
