Priethal is a place in the Steyrtal in the Traunviertel of Upper Austria and belongs to the municipality of Grünburg in the Kirchdorf an der Krems district .

geography

The place is 7½ kilometers into the valley south of Untergrünburg , just before Leonstein . It is located at the confluence of the Schmiedleitnerbach (Rinnerbach, Rinnerbergerbach) in the Steyr , at around 405  m above sea level. A. Höhe, and at the foot of the Leonsteiner Burghügel (Hausberg) , a foothill of the Großer Landberg  ( 899  m above sea level ).

The cadastral and local border between Obergrünburg and Leonstein runs in the creek through the place (so that for statistical reasons it is run as a hamlet in Obergrünburg and as a Rotte in Leonstein ). It is located directly on Steyrtal Straße  (B 140)

The place is largely merged with Au to the south.

History, culture and sights

Leonstein with Prietal and Castle, in front of the Landsberg ( Vischer 1674 )

Leonstein Castle on the Hausberg could have existed as early as 900; it is documented in 1140. It was destroyed in 1390 after a three-month siege. A fire cannon was used for the first time in Austria, it was stationed opposite on the Rabenstein. A few years later, a small castle stable was built again at the foot of the mountain, which was expanded into Feichta Castle (today "Leonstein") in the second half of the 15th century .

The current place name is documented in 1355 as Guetel on the Predal .

Prielthal was an important factory location, there were three plants here: a scythe factory with a mill already mentioned in 1550 (Hierzenberger, then Weinmeister, closed in 1866, today a bakery-confectionery); above the lance hammer mentioned in 1603, soon abandoned; and at the mouth of the Schmiedleitnerbach stream, a board saw from 1754 (called Zeugstatt, Rosenauer).

The “ Römerbrücke ” from 1787 over the Schmiedleitnerbach has been preserved from the old Steyrtalstrasse . From 1890 to 1980 the Steyrtalbahn ran through the town, the Leonstein train station was next door in Au. It was shut down and dismantled for reasons of profitability. Today the Steyrtalradweg  (R8) exists here .
