history

Construction work on the Purtschellerhaus began in 1899 and was inaugurated on July 22, 1900. Originally the house was supposed to be called "Hut am Hohen Göll of the Sonneberg Section". Shortly before the opening, however, Ludwig Purtscheller , one of the most important alpinists of the time, died. The Sonneberg Section then decided to name the hut “Purtschellerhaus” in his honor.

As early as 1909, the premises became too small and the hut was expanded with an extension. In 1937, at the suggestion of the Sonneberg Section, the exact boundary line at the hut was determined. One third of the hut is in Germany and two thirds are in Austria. On the way from the old dining room to the toilet, you cross the border from Germany to Austria - marked by a line of paint on the floor. The Purtschellerhaus also owes this peculiar location an increase in visitors after the end of the Second World War. Since the Allies otherwise did not allow border traffic between the two countries, some 'separated' could only legally meet and talk in the hut. Even a bilateral wedding took place here at the time.

During the post-war period, the building was managed in trust by the Berchtesgaden AV section . In 1959, the Sonneberg Section took over administration again after relocating its headquarters to Coburg in Upper Franconia .
