history

Etymology of the place name

In the debate about the origin of the place name "Quadrath", there is only agreement among local researchers on one point: It does not come from the Latin term "quadratus" (square). The most widespread explanation is that "quad" is derived from the word "kott", which in Old High German meant "bad"; "-Rath", "-rade" or "-rode" meant a piece of cleared earth. Because the place is in the Erft lowlands , so the ground was partly swampy, the place name originally meant "bad cleared earth". This interpretation is also supported by the fact that the place name means “Kotteroth” in the local dialect. But the thesis is also put forward that the name is of Latin origin, namely derived from the term “ad quartum decimum” for the 14th milestone on the Roman military road from Cologne to Aachen, which led through the town.

Historical development

Quadrath and Ichendorf were first mentioned in the 11th century . The villages belonged to the county since around 1000 and to the Duchy of Jülich since 1356 . The border with the Electorate of Cologne ran a few kilometers to the east. The neighboring town of Königsdorf already belonged to the same. The district "Quaetraet" (Quadrath) can be seen for the first time since 1585 on maps by the cartographer and copper engraver Gerhard Mercator . "Ichendorp" (Ichendorf) can be found in the Atlas Maior von Blaeu from 1645 (map "Iuliacensis et Montensis Ducatus"). After the dynasty of Jülich died out after 1609, the place and the entire Duchy of Wittelsbach became an electoral Palatinate property. The brief interlude of the French occupation (since 1794) of the western Rhineland was followed by the annexation to Prussia through the Congress of Vienna (1815) .

The discovery of lignite in the immediate vicinity turned the farming village into an industrial site. The lignite mines supplied a briquette factory, parts of which are still preserved on Bundesstrasse 55 today. With the Martinswerk (formerly manufacturer of blast furnace clay for aluminum production), the first chemical industry plant was established in 1913, which used energy and electricity from the plants of the Rhenish lignite mining area for its special chemical products based on aluminum hydroxide and aluminum oxide . The energy-intensive Ichendorfer Glashütte was founded in 1898/1899. It was a major glass manufacturer that exported all over the world until 1986. In 2002 , the last coal was mined in the Bergheim open-cast lignite mine , which was located directly on the northeastern border. At the same time as mining began in 1991, the backfilling and recultivation of the open pit mine began. Ten years later, both measures were completed.

On January 1, 1975, the previously independent community Quadrath-Ichendorf in the Bergheim (Erft) district was incorporated into the district town of Bergheim.

The Catholic Church has a parish in both districts : St. Laurentius and Heilig Kreuz. The Protestant Petri Church is on the border between Quadrath and Ichendorf. In addition, Quadrath-Ichendorf also has a mosque in the form of a converted festival or dance hall, built around 1900-1910, and a cemetery.

The evangelical parish of Quadrath-Ichendorf uses the Petrikirche, consecrated in 1969, as a church building. It was planned and built between 1968 and 1969 by the Bedburg architect Karl Sander , the design for the glazing comes from the Cologne artist Rudolf Alfons Scholl, and the organ was built and installed by Willi Peter from Cologne.

In Quadrath-Ichendorf there is a municipal comprehensive school , two elementary schools and several kindergartens . There is a youth center for young people near the swimming pool . The proportion of foreigners is 15.6 percent.

Quadrath-Ichendorf has a retirement home as well as numerous apartments built to meet the needs of pensioners. The Ichendorf parish of Heilig-Kreuz offers a weekly senior afternoon with church service and coffee. Furthermore, the AWO local association Quadrath-Ichendorf regularly organizes a meeting of pensioners in the after-work room.

Due to the expansion of the place there are several business centers where the things of the daily need can be bought. Particularly noteworthy are the Quadra-Park, which has been expanded into a shopping center with many shops, as well as two discounters that operate branches in Quadrath-Ichendorf. The place also has two drugstores, which are also frequented by non-residents because of their good location. There are also many smaller and larger specialist shops on Cologne-Aachener-Strasse.

The B 55 , today L 361 , runs through the village. The access to the A 61 (Bergheim-Süd) is in the immediate vicinity.

The town has been connected to the rail network since 1896 by the Erftbahn . There is a well-developed public transport system. From the Quadrath-Ichendorf train station , the Erftbahn runs regularly and without changing trains directly to Cologne and Düsseldorf. In addition, the Rhein-Erft-Verkehrsgesellschaft operates several bus routes here.

Paul Roleff's postcards are still traded today and can be recognized by their signature “PR” in a square.
