In February 2004 he took part in a course within the framework of the NATO program Partnership for Peace in Hungary and on February 19, 2004 killed the Armenian participant Gurgen Markarjan ( Armenian Գուրգեն Մարգարյան, in English transcription Gurgen Markarian) 1 in his sleep with an ax after he stabbed him with a knife.

1 The common English spelling Gurgen Margaryan is a transliteration , because the name is written with g (գ), but it is pronounced like k '(ք).

judgment

Safarovs act was by a court Trauma established that he had suffered when he during the war to Nagorno-Karabakh had to flee. However, this was refuted elsewhere by Safarov when he stated that he studied in Baku and Turkey between 1992 and 1996.

Tradition and pardon

After eight years in prison, Hungary handed Ramil Safarov over to Azerbaijan on August 31, 2012. Although the Azerbaijani government has officially promised to continue the life sentence, Azerbaijani President İlham Əliyev pardoned Ramil Safarov shortly after his arrival in Baku and acquitted him of his life sentence.

The transfer of the murderer Safarov, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in Hungary to Azerbaijan, is generally seen as a deal with the government in Baku. Since the beginning of August there have been media reports that Azerbaijan wants to buy Hungarian government bonds worth two to three billion euros and thus Safarov "free". Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán confessed to having struck a deal with Azerbaijan and stated that, through the tradition of Ramil Safarov, he wanted to give a sign to the Republic of Azerbaijan "to signal security to possible new lenders" and added that he assumed that they would Safarov would not be pardoned until months later because of "health problems".
