action
The wife of Washington, DC police officer William Van Den Broeck dies in an airplane disaster. Van Den Broeck found out that she was accompanying the husband of Kay Chandler, who is a member of the US Congress and is about to be re-elected. Van Den Broeck does further research and finds that his wife and husband were having an affair.
Chandler regards Van Den Broeck's investigation as a nuisance at first. She meets him in a bar and points out to him that she - unlike Van Den Broeck - is in the center of media attention. Van Den Broeck is surprised that, as a police officer, he immediately recognizes people's lies, but was unable to notice his wife's affair. He was happy during the period of marriage, says William. After leaving the bar, Chandler is accidentally photographed by a political supporter, she worries that Van Den Broeck could also be seen in the photo. She brings him home in her car, when William and Kay suddenly kiss in the car.
Chandler's daughter, a teenager, asks about her father's affair she had overlooked. Kay later calls William and tells his answering machine about her concerns. She says media interest will wane if she no longer runs for the next legislature. Kay and William meet on the sidelines of an election rally, they pretend to other people that they hardly know each other.
Kay later finds an invitation from Williams to his cabin in the wilderness on the windshield of her car. She accepts the invitation and spends a night of love with William. The next day, he asks if she wants her past life back, if only she could. She replies that she has already written off her marriage, which had ended by the catastrophe .
The media learns about William and Kay's relationship. In order to avoid media interest, Chandler decided not to run again.
