The Rudolf-Tonn-Stadion (also Schwechat Sports Center ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Rannersdorf , a district of the Austrian municipality of Schwechat , in the federal state of Lower Austria . It has been the home of SV Schwechat since its completion in 1980 and of FC Mauerwerk since February 2018 and is also used for athletics events.
General
The stadium has 2,608 seats, with standing space reaching a total capacity of around 7,000 visitors. It was named in 2001 after the former mayor of Schwechat, Rudolf Tonn (* 1931; † 2015). The construction of the stadium was made necessary by the construction of the Ost Autobahn (A4). For this, the Schwechat river had to be relocated, which in turn was in the way of the former “Germaniastadion” in Germaniastraße, which had been the home of SV Schwechat since September 11, 1904. The stadium was built due to its proximity to ASK Antonshof in Rannersdorf.
In November 1976 , the executing architects were selected from eleven architects who took part in the architectural competition. The new stadium was then planned by the architects Josef Hums and Alois Seliger, both of whom have jointly managed an architectural office in Schwechat since 1973. The first groundbreaking took place on September 6, 1977 by Rudolf Tonn, the construction work lasted until 1980. The construction costs amounted to 11.7 million euros and were financed entirely by the public sector. The four floodlight masts are each 40 meters high.
The stadium was inaugurated on May 24, 1980 with the game of the 1st Division Austria against Vienna (3-0) in front of 7,700 visitors in the presence of personalities such as Kurt Heller , Karl Blecha , Heinz Krendl and Wolfgang Röken . SV Schwechat itself was only able to play professional football here in 1985/86, at least in the 2nd division . At Whitsun 1991 the stadium was damaged and repaired by the flood-carrying Schwechat , which flows next to the stadium.
When there was a chance to return to this league on June 12, 2003 in the relegation game against SpG Wattens-Wacker Tirol , a new audience record was set with 8,500 visitors, the game ended 3-2 for Tirol. In addition to football, matches from the Austrian Football League are also played in the Rudolf Tonn Stadium .
FC Mauerwerk has been playing its home games in the Rudolf-Tonn-Stadion since the end of February 2018 .
