The Ranziger See is a 36 hectare and up to twelve meters deep natural lake in the village of Ranzig , a district of the Brandenburg municipality of Tauche in the Oder-Spree district .

The village center of Ranzig lies on the north-western shore of the lake. The “Märkisches Seecamp” campsite and a beach are located on the central west bank. The groundwater-fed water has excellent bathing water quality.

Geography and natural space

The Ranziger See is located north of the Schwielochsee in the valley of the Spree on the Beeskower Platte . The plateau is listed as No. 824 in the main natural units of Germany in the main unit group No. 82 East Brandenburg Heath and Lake District . The Spree flows around 500 meters east of the lake; there is no connection between the lake and the river.

The Rancid lake is part of the protected landscape area Schwielochsee. Around three hundred meters northeast of the Ranziger See lake is the Spreewiesen nature reserve and FFH area south of Beeskow . The Spreeradweg and the Märkische Schlösser-Tour cycle path to the hand cable ferry in Leißnitz , on which cyclists and hikers can cross the river, run along the southern shore of the lake . To the west of the lake the federal highway 87 passes, which connects Ranzig to the south with Trebatsch and to the north with Beeskow .

Water profile and bathing water quality

Bathing area on the west bank

The roughly oval, poorly structured basin of the water stretches from north to south over around 975 meters, its maximum width is around 460 meters. The lake, which covers 36 hectares and is up to 12 meters deep, forms a stable temperature stratification in summer . The water temperature was 30 cm below the surface on average between 2009 and 2012 with a maximum of 25 ° C, a minimum of 15.1 ° C and an average of 20.5 ° C. The visibility of the clear, groundwater-fed lake at the bathing area is 1.8 meters on average during the season. The pH value fluctuated between 2008 and 2011 between 8.0 and 8.9. The salinity (conversion from conductivity ) is given as fresh water: <0.5 ‰ .

According to the bathing water directive of the EC of 2006/07, the bathing water quality is regularly checked. In the most recent collection periods from 2008 to 2012, the quality was rated as excellent (three stars). The microbiological parameters after the percentile calculation resulted in the following values for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci (indicators of faecal pollution of bathing water) in the period 2009 to 2012:

  • for Escherichia coli (limit 1800/100 ml) measured values of 78 per 100 ml for the 95th percentile and of 77 per 100 ml for the 90th percentile and
  • for intestinal enterococci (limit value 700/100 ml) measured values of 16 per 100 ml for the 95th percentile and of 15 per 100 ml for the 90th percentile.

Flora and fauna

Reeds on the west bank

The Ranziger See largely has near-natural shore areas. The east bank is covered by extensive stocks of reed beds , which are only sparsely developed in parts on the populated west bank. There is a small natural silting zone at the northern tip . The east bank and south west bank are surrounded by extensive pine forests .

The lake is used by anglers and professional fishermen and is particularly popular because of its good stocks of pike ; Pike weighing up to 22 pounds are believed to have been caught here. According to the Brandenburg Red List , pikeperch and eel are also found in the lake . Tench , carp , other perch and whitefish species complete the fish fauna.

First mention and name

The body of water was first recorded under the name Rantziger See in 1668. Nothing is known about older names and about the name in Slavic times . It is named after the village of Ranzig, first mentioned in a document as wrantzck in 1393 . The name is derived from the basic form * Vron'sk in Old Sorbian * vron = raven or * vrona = crow and means place where there are ravens or crows . The village of Ranzig has around 375 inhabitants and an area of 964 hectares.
