Raul Zelik (* 1968 in Munich ) is a German writer , journalist , translator and political scientist .

Zelik has been working as a freelance writer since 1992. In 1997, he published his debut novel Friss und die sein ( Edition Nautilus ), in which the death of the right-wing extremist Gerhard Kaindl is negotiated. Novels and non-fiction books on Latin America followed in 1999, followed by a script project with director Detlev Buck in 2001. Zelik's breakthrough came with the novel Berlin Relationships (Blumenbar-Verlag), which was nominated for the German Book Prize in 2005. Zelik's subsequent novel Der armed Freund (Blumenbar-Verlag 2007), which tells the Basque conflict on the basis of an unequal friendship, was described by Beatrix Langner in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung as a “beneficial antidote to the heated up terrorism discourse”. Together with Petra Elser, Zelik published the novel Der gefrorene Mann (by Joseba Sarrionandia, Blumenbar-Verlag) in 2007 , one of the first direct literary translations from Basque. In 2010 he published a book of conversations with the Marxist political economist Elmar Altvater . In it, the two discuss the chances of non-capitalist societies and the failure of state socialism.

With Venezuela más allá de Chávez , La Negra (2004 and 2005 with Editorial Virus, Barcelona), Situaciones Berlinesas and Lagun Armatua (both 2009 with Editorial Txalaparta, Tafalla), some of Zelik's books are also available in Spanish and Basque translations.

At the same time, Zelik was and is active as a social scientist. From 1990 to 1995 he studied political science and Latin American studies at the Free University of Berlin. Since then he has published regularly in specialist publications. His main focus was on the applicability of theoretical concepts to current Latin American politics. Zelik discussed the concept of the state of emergency developed by Giorgio Agamben using the example of Colombia and the concept of the rhizome from Gilles Deleuze / Félix Guattari in connection with the social movements in Venezuela. Zelik received his doctorate in 2008 with a study on the Colombian paramilitary as a case study of informalized (in) security. From 2005 he taught regularly in Berlin, in 2008 he was visiting professor at the IEPRI (Institute for Political Studies and International Relations) in Bogotá . In 2009 he was appointed professor of political science at the National University of Colombia and taught political theory and international politics in Medellín. He gave up the professorship in 2013 for family reasons. In 2017/2018 he was a substitute professor for international and societal politics at the University of Kassel.

As a publicist, Zelik v. a. for the Swiss weekly newspaper and for the young world . He also regularly produces radio features for WDR and Deutschlandfunk .

He was a co-founder of the Berlin organization For a Left Current . In June 2012, shortly after the Goettingen party congress of the Die Linke party , he became a member of this party. On May 29, 2016, he was elected to the party executive committee.
