The Reiherbach is an orographically left tributary of the Lutter in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It has a length of 10.7 km.

River course

The Reiherbach rises from a spring pot on the southern slope of the Teutoburg Forest in the Bielefeld district of Senne , not far from the Bielefeld airfield . Like most of the rivers in this region, the Reiherbach also has a direction of flow from northeast to southwest. After a distance of about one kilometer, the brook reaches the Senner district Windelsbleiche and crosses the area of the Rieselfelder Windel , which is currently a private nature reserve of over 60  hectares .

After the Reiherbach has left the Rieselfelder, it enters the adjacent 5.9 hectare nature reserve Black Fens . Here the Toppmannsbach , which also converges from the Rieselfeldern, is recorded on the right-hand side, and shortly afterwards the Kreidebach, also on the right-hand side, converging from the north.

Behind the Black Fens, the water enters another protected area called the Reiherbach and Röhrbach , a 122.3 hectare area consisting primarily of wet meadows and deciduous forest, in which the Reiherbach is cut into a brook valley in places. To the west of this nature reserve, to the north of the Gütersloh districts of Friedrichsdorf and Avenwedde or to the south of Bielefeld-Ummeln , the stream first crosses a barrage, then takes on the Röhrbach, which tapers to the left, and then flows towards Isselhorst . After the Reiherbach has temporarily formed the border between the urban areas of Bielefeld and Gütersloh, it flows in the center of Isselhorst on the left into the Lutter, which flows into the Ems at Harsewinkel .

The Reiherbach overcomes a height difference of 48 meters along its course, resulting in an average bed gradient of 4.5 ‰.

environment

A few years ago the Reiherbach was one of the most polluted brooks in Bielefeld. However, the water quality has improved significantly after the wastewater treatment of the textile company Windel was converted. This wastewater was trickled into the area of today's nature reserve , collected again after filtering the soil via drainage and finally discharged into the Reiherbach via secondary settling ponds. After the coulure of sewage set and the area into a major nature reserve today and recreation area was redesigned, it came this measure also to the course restoration of herons creek. Since November 2006, the water that was previously straightened in this area has been running through a new bed created as a wide depression. In addition, organ- continuous bottom slides were built.

In the meantime, the Reiherbach has been assigned to water quality class II almost in its entire course and is therefore considered to be "moderately polluted". Only in the vicinity of the source and in its tributary Toppmannsbach does the classification “critically polluted” (quality class II – III) currently apply.

Flora and fauna

In the area of the Reiherbach, larger areas of reed beds and riparian perennials can be found, especially in the area of the "Black Venn". In the old wood stocks , which are mainly found in the protected area “Heron and Röhrbach”, three species of woodpecker are native to the great spotted , green and black woodpecker. Since there are many sticklebacks in the water , the kingfisher is also not uncommon. In addition, the dipper occurs in the protected stream floodplain. The improvement in water quality that has occurred in recent years has resulted in sensitive aquatic insects such as the larvae of the banded demoiselle returning to the Reiherbach .

The Rieselfelder Windel, which is crossed by the Reiherbach, also offers a special biodiversity, especially with regard to the avifauna .

etymology

While the name "Reiherbach" may refer to the occurrence of herons there, the name "Strothbach", by which the brook was also known earlier, refers to the formerly existing swampy lowland , which only drains and becomes one in the course of human settlement Grassland floodplain was redesigned.

Another name for the water, at least in the area of Ummeln, is "Ramsbach". This is also referred to by the name of the former Ramsloh farmers , which was dissolved before 1663 and the Ummeln farmers took their place.
