Reinhard Düchting (born March 13, 1936 in Witten ; † April 12, 2018 in Heidelberg ) was a German Middle Latin and Neo-Latin philologist .

life and work

Düchting was born on March 13, 1936 as the second of three children of the married couple Emil Düchting (born April 26, 1901 ; † May 26, 1979 ) and Bertha Düchting, b. Höper (born September 3, 1898 - March 24, 1980 ) in Witten an der Ruhr. After a school career that was interrupted twice due to illness ( pulmonary tuberculosis ) , he obtained his Abitur in 1957 at the Oberschule for Boys, which later became the municipal Ruhr-Gymnasium in Witten . In 1957 he began studying Protestant theology , German and initially English in Heidelberg . He continued his studies at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen , but after only one semester he returned to Heidelberg, where the Middle Latin philology, to which he had increasingly focused on since 1959 , inspired by Peter Wapnewski , since 1957 via a von Walther Bulst established seminar. In addition to Bulst and Wapnewski, the theologians Hans Freiherr von Campenhausen and Gerhard von Rad and the Germanist Arthur Henkel were the formative academic teachers. After the 1st state examination in 1962, he received an assistant position at the chair there in 1964, and in 1965 he received his doctorate from Bulst with a dissertation on Sedulius Scottus . The work, published by Fink in Munich in 1968, was the first to subject the corpus of 80 poems from the Codex Bruxellensis 10615-10729 edited by Ludwig Traube ( Monumenta Germaniae Historica Poetae III.1, 1896) to a comprehensive text-critical, metrical, content-related and source-critical commentary and is valid until today as an important contribution to the understanding of this carmina . That is why it is regarded as a standard work on the author, alongside the critical new edition by Jean Meyers ( Corpus Christianorum 117, 1991).

In 1976, Düchting completed his habilitation with a text that combined five studies on Latin poetry from the early and high Middle Ages. In 1980 he received a professorship (C2) in Heidelberg, where he remained until his release in 2000. From 1984 he also held a teaching position at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg , and in 1985 and 1986 a substitute professor at the Georg August University of Göttingen .

In addition to Middle Latin literature, in which poetry and metrics remained his focus, Düchting also expanded his field of work to include neo-Latin literature, which became increasingly important for his research and from which he wrote numerous writings (including by Jakob Wimpfeling , Helius Eobanus Hessus , Justus Lipsius , Olympia Fulvia Morata , Georg Fabricius and David Chyträus ) commented on and edited it in collaboration with his students.

His fields of work also included Heidelberg regional and university history , to which he has contributed through a large number of publications and lectures.

He is also the author of the section "The Middle Latin Literature" in the New Handbook of Literary Studies as well as numerous articles in scholarly reference works such as the Harenbergs Lexicon of World Literature , the Killy Literature Lexicon , the Lexicon of the Middle Ages , Religion Past and Present , the Theological Real Encyclopedia and the Author Lexicon .

It was extremely important to Reinhart Düchting not to conduct humanities studies in the so-called ivory tower alone , but to bring them closer to a broad public interested in cultural history and thus to contribute to the preservation of the cultural heritage in the living consciousness. He therefore played through his numerous public lectures, contributions to exhibition catalogs, obituaries and appreciations of scholars and other articles in the local press and in scientific journals as well as a member or cooperation partner of corresponding associations and working groups, such as the Friends of the Archive and Museum of Heidelberg University . V., of which he has been chairman since 2003, the Società Dante Alighieri Comitato di Heidelberg eV, the Heidelberger Geschichtsverein e. V., the Heidelberg Thursday Club or the Jung-Stilling-Gesellschaft e. V., played an outstanding role in the cultural life of the city of Heidelberg and its surroundings, not least his place of residence, Sandhausen .

Düchting was married to Doris Düchting, born in 1964. Hartenstein (born September 17, 1936). The marriage had two children.

Honors

On February 28, 2001 Düchting was awarded the gold medal (Nummus aureus) of the Masaryk University in Brno , whose seminar for Classical Philology he had donated to his Middle Latin specialist library.
