Richard Ward

Richard Ward (born April 15, 1689 in Newport , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † August 21, 1763 ibid) was a politician in colonial North America. He was the 22nd Governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations from 1741 to 1742.

family

Ward was born the son of the merchant Thomas Ward and his wife Amey Billings. His paternal grandfather, Thomas Ward, was from Gloucester . He served in Oliver Cromwell's army and emigrated to Newport in 1673 after the Stuart Restoration . In 1709 Ward married Mary Tillinghast. The marriage had 14 children, including Samuel Ward , who served as governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations from 1762 to 1763 and from 1765 to 1767.

Career

Ward took his first public office in 1712 as the 29th Attorney General of Rhode Island . He held this office for a year. Then he was appointed secretary of the general assembly of the colony and was chief clerk (employee of the judiciary) of the colony between 1714 and 1730. In 1726 he was part of a delegation that determined the border with Connecticut . From 1730 to 1733 Ward was foreign minister of the colony, and from 1740 he took over the office of deputy governor. A year later he was promoted to the colony's 22nd governor for a term. After his death in 1763, Ward was buried in a brick tomb in the Common Burying Ground and Island Cemetery in Newport.

Awards

Ward was made an honorary citizen of Newport in 1710 .
