Rif is a settlement in the city of Hallein in the Hallein district in the Salzburger Land in Austria .
Today, Rif is referred to as Taxach-Rif in connection with Taxach .
Geographical location
Rif lies on the west bank of the Salzach .
Origin of name
Rif is derived from the Latin word ripa ( shore ). The place name originated at the time when Salzburg belonged to the Roman province of Noricum and the Roman population settled here. The place was given the name because there was probably a prominent and accessible bank of the Salzach here.
