Old town

The old town of Hallein is located in this district and consists of a large number of medieval buildings. The entire old town is under monument protection. From the 1980s onwards, a facade campaign on the occasion of the 750th anniversary, the bypassing the old town via the Pernerinsel , the construction of a pedestrian zone, uniform paving and other measures resulted in a significant improvement in the cityscape and quality of life.

Keep

The area east of the Salzach and west of the Salzburg-Tiroler-Bahn, in which the Hallein-Burgfried cemetery, the Hallein-Burgfried elementary school and the Salzachtal Straße are located, is officially part of the Hallein district. The city of Hallein reports this area to Statistics Austria under the Hallein district and not under the independent Burgfried district .

Flood

Hallein, and especially the old town of Hallein, was repeatedly inundated by floods . A memorial stone ( flood monument on Salzachtalstrasse ) was erected for the Salzach flood in 1508 , which bears a marking of the water level at that time and describes a large-scale flooding of the city with much damage. In the centuries that followed, there were repeated reports of floods caused by high water levels in the Salzach, most recently in 2002 and 2013.

In addition to the Salzach, the Kotbach flowing down from the Dürrnberg and the Almbach coming from the Wiestal can also pose a flood hazard. For example, on August 10, 1976, continuous rainfalls turned the Kotbach into a raging brook, which doused the old town with masses of water. During the floods in Central Europe in 2002 , the Almbach overflowed its banks meters high.

After the devastating flood of 2002, numerous flood protection measures were initiated:

  • Conversion of the weir system at the Sohlstufe-Hallein hydropower plant (weir field lowering including bed load control measures)
  • Combination of river engineering measures ( groynes , widening) and linear protective structures (dams and walls)
  • Eight pumping stations on the Salzach and Almbach for orderly hinterland drainage

In a study commissioned by the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce , a comparison was made between the 2002 flood without flood protection and the 2013 flood with largely completed flood protection:

year Damage in € Disaster aid in €
2002 4,419,078 1,973,034
2013 287,653 89,335

The authors therefore come to the conclusion that, in comparison to investments, considerably greater economic damage can be prevented through prevention .
