history

Early history

Parish church St. Severin, in the background the old schoolhouse (former Severin's chapel)

Huninga was first mentioned in a document in 781, and in 970 there was already a church here that was consecrated to St. Severin von Noricum . Today's St. Severin Church has Romanesque-Gothic origins. Heining was incorporated into the Vornbach monastery in the 11th century and the crypt chapel in Passau Cathedral in the 16th century . On June 9, 1716, the independent parish of Heining was established.

Heining did not belong to the Hochstift Passau , but to the Duchy of Bavaria or Electorate of Bavaria and was one of the five offices of the Vilshofen Regional Court . After secularization in Bavaria , in 1804 the three classical altars of the port church Fürstenzell and the small choir organ from the monastery church of St. Nikola came to the parish church of Heining.

Heining as a community

In 1808, as part of the reorganization by the Kingdom of Bavaria, the municipality of Heining was founded. Besides the former electoral Heining, it also included parts of the former county of Neuburg and was subordinate to the Passau II district court.

The parish of Heining reached far beyond the parish boundaries. In 1819 the former Severinskapelle was converted into a school. In 1859 the church was extended by 7 meters. 1878 is the founding year of the Heining volunteer fire brigade. In 1886 the school was enlarged. On November 2, 1887, the new cemetery on Passauer Strasse was consecrated and the previous cemetery around the parish church was closed.

Four new pastoral care areas emerged from the Heining mother parish in the 20th century. The beginning was made in 1904 with the establishment of the Schalding branch on the left of the Danube, which was elevated to an independent parish in 1913. Schalding on the left of the Danube only belonged to the parish of Heining, but politically to the municipality of Kirchberg. The war memorial in front of the Heiningen parish church was inaugurated on September 24, 1922. In 1928 the Auerbach Expositur was founded, which in 1930 became a parish.

The Heining community was structured in a rural way, apart from a yeast factory and a clay factory. The Kachlet power station was built on the Danube between 1922 and 1927 . During the Second World War there was a prison camp between Schalding and Heining, which was converted into a refugee camp at the end of the war, where around 45,000 people found their first accommodation.

After the war, the Heining community changed primarily as a residential area, but also as a result of the settlement of several companies from a rural community to a suburban community. In 1953 a branch was built in Schalding on the right of the Danube, and in 1954 a school was built there. The school, which has existed in Neustift since 1900, received an extension in 1956 and 1968. The Neustift branch was established in 1958 and became a parish on September 25, 1961.

On December 4, 1960, the new Heiningen kindergarten was consecrated, and on November 5, 1963, the new school building. In 1969 the baroque pulpit was removed from the Heining parish church, and it was moved to the Kreuzberg parish church in 1982 . In 1971 the church received a new organ.

The incorporation

In a public survey in August / September 1971, 91.2% of the voters rejected the incorporation into Passau planned as part of the municipal reform . The Heiningen municipal council with mayor Hans Hösl finally did not bring a constitutional action against the incorporation, since the founding of the University of Passau and the formation of the Passau regional center depended on it (in contrast, the municipality of Grubweg lodged a complaint with the Bavarian constitutional court, which was rejected). On the occasion of the incorporation, local home nurse Franz Mader wrote a chronicle of Heining. On July 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality of Heining was incorporated into the city of Passau.
