Robert Joseph "Bobby" Goepfert (born May 9, 1983 in Kings Park , New York ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who was last under contract with the Düsseldorfer EG in the German Ice Hockey League between 2011 and 2016 .

Goepfert began his career in the United States Hockey League with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and then moved to the National Collegiate Athletic Association for four years , where he moved from Providence College to St. Cloud State University after two years . This change also happened for personal reasons, as he did not feel comfortable in Providence. More serious, however, was the fact that he inadvertently plagiarized a job in college, after which he was given a new opportunity at St. Cloud State University. Due to the regulations of the NCAA, however, he had to take a year off from active sport and used this time to advance his studies.

Goepfert was drawn in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft in 171st place by the Pittsburgh Penguins , but did not play a game in the National Hockey League .

Due to his good performance during his last two years of study, he recommended himself for the ECHL after graduating and signed a contract with Augusta Lynx , where he was also able to convince. In 2008 he made his debut in the AHL with the Hershey Bears , but only brought it to three missions and completed most of the season with the South Carolina Stingrays in the ECHL. In the same season he also played a game for EC Red Bull Salzburg , where they continued to bet on Jordan Parise . For the 2009/10 season , however, he was the first goalkeeper from the Salzburg team. After Reinhard Divis was signed, Goepfert's contract was terminated. In December 2009 Goepfert signed a contract until the end of the 2009/10 season with the Hamburg Freezers , which needed a new goalkeeper due to an injury to the regular goalkeeper Jean-Marc Pelletier .

In August 2010 Goepfert signed a contract with the Charlotte Checkers from the American Hockey League , which also applied to the ECHL. A year later he was signed by the Düsseldorfer EG as a substitute goalkeeper for Jean-Sébastien Aubin . After a weak first third of the season, DEG was in crisis. Coach Tomlinson then replaced Jean-Sébastien Aubin with his substitute Bobby Goepfert. DEG only surrendered one point in the next seven games and climbed to third place and Goepfert became a regular goalkeeper. In addition, as in his time in Hamburg, he became a crowd favorite after just a few games due to his style of play. His first shutout for Düsseldorf was on November 4, 2011 in Munich against the EHC based there . As the first player alongside captain Daniel Kreutzer , he received a contract for the 2012/2013 season. With his performance, Goepfert played a decisive role in the fact that the DEG Metro Stars made it to the top of the table despite a weak start to the season. Only on the last day of the game was the direct playoff participation missed. This then succeeded in the pre-playoffs with two wins against the Iserlohn Roosters . In the quarter-finals, DEG was eliminated after five of seven possible games against ERC Ingolstadt .

After the departure of the name sponsor Metro, the coaches and almost all players left DEG, which was now back under its traditional name Düsseldorfer EG . Goepfert remained loyal to the club as one of only four players. Two years at the bottom of the table followed, in which Goepfert often prevented higher defeats for his club. After victories it became a ritual that Goepfert showed little dance interludes in front of the fans. In the 2013/2014 season, Goepfert remained a regular goalkeeper despite the commitment of Sweden's Stefan Ridderwall . On December 1, 2013, Gopefert set a new DEL record: In the 2-1 win after penalty shoot-out against the Eisbären Berlin, Goepfert saved 77 of 78 shots on goal. Eight days later, Goepfert experienced a critical situation at DEG's home game against the Kölner Haie: After 29 minutes, a slap shot by Cologne striker Nathan Robinson hit him in the larynx, whereupon Goepfert fell. Supported by fellow players, he left the ice and vomited behind the gang. Since the swelling of the larynx was pressing on the windpipe, team doctor Dr. Ulf Blecker make a tracheotomy. Only after his return from the hospital did Goepfert find out that his life had been in danger for a short time. Just 53 hours after the accident, Goepfert was back in goal against EHC Munich and led his team to a 2-1 victory.

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Goepfert put a hip injury out of action for several weeks. Trainer Christof Kreutzer committed with Tyler Beskorowany therefore another goalkeeper who reached a quota of over 92 percent and led the DEG in fifth place in the table and the semi-finals. At the end of the season he was voted DEL Goalkeeper of the Year. Accordingly, Gopfert only remained as a substitute goalkeeper after recovering from injury.
