Rudolf Frommel , knight of Frommel since 1902 , (born May 17, 1857 in Augsburg , † July 12, 1921 in Rauhenzell ) was a Bavarian cavalry general .

Life

family

Frommel was the son of a factory manager. He married Fanny Steinle in January 1895. After her death in 1897, Frommel married Elisabeth von Kraft in February 1898, with whom he had two children.

Military career

He attended a humanistic grammar school and subsequently joined the 2nd Uhlan regiment "King" of the Bavarian Army in 1874 . After Frommel had successfully completed the military school in Munich, he was promoted to secondary lieutenant in 1876 . In 1881 he was transferred to the 2nd Heavy Rider Regiment "Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este" in Landshut . From 1887 to 1890 Frommel graduated from the War Academy , which made him qualify for the higher adjutantage. First as Rittmeister , Frommel worked in the War Ministry from 1896 . For his achievements, Frommel was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown in 1902 . After further promotions he resigned as a colonel in the troop service and was from February 25, 1905 to April 18, 1906 commander of the 1st Heavy Rider Regiment "Prince Karl of Bavaria" . This was followed by an appointment as commander of the 1st Cavalry Brigade while being promoted to major general . On March 11, 1910, he gave up the brigade , was promoted to lieutenant general and appointed inspector of the cavalry . With the outbreak of the First World War , Frommel was reactivated and appointed Higher Cavalry Commander No. 3 . In this function he was subordinate to the Prussian 7th , Saxon 8th and the Bavarian Cavalry Division , which he commanded in the 6th Army, initially during the battle in Lorraine and before Nancy - Épinal .
