Run & Ride for Reading e. V. (formerly Ride for Reading ) is a non-profit association promoting reading among young people and children.

The association was founded in 2008 by Oliver Gritz and Anton Bergmann. Oliver Gritz is the chairman and managing director. Bergmann got out in 2010. Further board members are Henning Krautmacher , Klaus Grommes and Manfred Brodeßer. The focus of activity is the Cologne / Bonn region and the headquarters of the Niederkassel-Mondorf Foundation .

Goals and purpose

Run & Ride for Reading aims to promote the learning and reading skills and motivation of children and young people. You should read, learn and develop with pleasure and with great enthusiasm for life.

For this purpose, Run & Ride for Reading sets up so-called reading clubs, especially at schools in socially disadvantaged areas, and supports their operation. Setup and operation include:

  • Procurement of furniture, books, computers and other media
  • Implementation of seminars and training courses for the club supervisors in cooperation with the Reading Foundation in Mainz
  • Organization of sponsorships by companies and deserving fellow citizens e.g. B. to carry out readings, coaching and other forms of support for reading club members
  • Implementation of further targeted measures to increase the motivation to learn and read

The reading clubs are based on a concept by the Reading Foundation in Mainz. Run & Ride for Reading also organizes close on-site support by a qualified reading club manager.

Funds that Run & Ride for Reading raises to set up the reading clubs come from donations, sponsorship money and charity events.

The fundraising events include the annual sports events racing bike donation tour and the Cologne reading run.

Reading clubs

Run & Ride for Reading reading clubs are located in schools as well as in extracurricular youth facilities. The offer of the reading clubs includes regular, year-round group-oriented reading promotion by pedagogically trained staff (e.g. teachers or employees of the Open All-Day School (OGTS)). In addition, the reading club offers opportunities to involve volunteers. The children are actively involved in decision-making processes, i. H. The reading clubs are often geared closely to the interests of children and young people. It is important that the reading club offers are leisure-oriented. As a rule, many offers also take place outside of the classroom, especially in all-day schools.

Reading clubs are intended to increase reading motivation and competence and encourage them to acquire knowledge independently. Various media are available to the children and young people in their reading room. The children learn to deal with content independently and continue their education in a playful environment. Reading clubs are suitable for children between 6 and 16 years of age.

Examples of activities

  • Creative media work: record radio plays, create cartoons, draw your own comics, photo projects, internet projects, etc.
  • Writing workshops, poetry hip-hop
  • Performing theater, playful theming of intercultural aspects
  • Book exhibitions, "Book Slam" competitions
  • Reading nights, author readings, reading rallies
  • Reading aloud - e.g. B. on the nationwide reading day
  • Creative craft ideas, e.g. B. “Reading with scissors” with newspapers
  • Excursions to libraries and bookstores
  • Media lending
  • Participation in competitions and other projects offered by the Reading Foundation

Due to the variety of offers, it is possible to react flexibly to the frequent shifts in interests of the age group.
