The Salitral district is located in the Morropón province of the Piura region in northwestern Peru . The district was founded on October 8, 1840. It has an area of 614.03 km². At the 2017 census, there were 8,527 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 8,498, in 2007 it was 8,516. The administrative seat is the 162 m high village of Salitral with 1,021 inhabitants (as of 2017). Salitral is located on the right bank of the Río Piura above the confluence of the Río Bigote , 45 km southeast of the provincial capital Chulucanas .
Geographical location
The Salitral district is located in the southeast of the Morropón province. The district has a length in north-south direction of 40 km and a maximum width of 33 km. It is located in the western foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The area is crossed by the Río Piura in a north-westerly direction.
The Salitral district borders in the southwest on the Olmos district ( Lambayeque province ), in the west on the La Matanza district , in the northwest on the Buenos Aires district , in the northeast on the San Juan de Bigote district , in the east on the Canchaque and San Miguel districts de El Faique (both in the province of Huancabamba ) and in the southeast to the district of Huarmaca (also in the province of Huancabamba).
