Salt is a city in the province of Girona in the autonomous region of Catalonia in northeastern Spain with 31,362 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It is one of the most densely populated municipalities in the Comarca of Gironès .
geography
Geographical location
Salt is located on the Ter River , which flows through the city from west to east, in the immediate vicinity of the city of Girona . It is the second largest municipality in the urban area of Girona.
history
The first inhabitants of the region were probably Iberians . The region, over which the Visigoths ruled, was conquered by the Moors in the 7th century . In the year 785, the city was Girona of Charlemagne - in the immediate vicinity of Salt - conquered and one of the fourteen original counties of Catalonia made (see also County Girona ). The region around Girona was sacked and depopulated in 793 by Hisham I , the emir of Córdoba .
Salt is mentioned for the first time in 823 in one of the oldest surviving documents in the region. There are two hypotheses as to the origin of the name Salt: The first hypothesis is derived from the Spanish word "Salto" for waterfall. In Italian, the word Salto also means "waterfall height of a mill", so Salt would be a place where a water mill was operated. According to the second hypothesis, the name Salt (Saltu) stands for a place where salt was traded (1166, 1182, 1245, 1305, 1362 ...).
During the Middle Ages , the community was exclusively rural. The population lived in Masias , the typical farmhouses for the region of Catalonia, along the Acequia del Monars . The region remained dominated by agriculture until the 18th century, with the population of Salt remaining very small.
In the 19th century, several textile factories settled along the Acequia del Monars irrigation canal . In 1910 Joan de Coma i Cros became the sole owner of all three textile factories in Salt, which initiated a fundamental reform of the industrial infrastructure between 1910 and 1923: the expansion of the textile factory Coma i Cros , today the seat of the ERAM College for New Media and the construction of the Montfullà power station.
During the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War , the community experienced a remarkable cultural boom, with the publications El Poble de Salt (1930) and L'amic del poble (1931). In addition, anarchism was consolidated in Salt. Before the city was taken, many of the Republicans fled to France . After the city was captured by Franco's troops on February 4, 1939 , anarcho-syndicalism in Salt was brutally ended by repressive measures.
As a result of the construction of residential quarters for workers from Andalusia and Extremadura , without parks or green spaces, the quality of life in Salt decreased significantly from 1974 onwards . In 1975, during the fascist rule of Franco, Salt was incorporated into the city of Girona together with Sarrià de Ter . In 1983, after an intense struggle for the corporation under public law , Salt became independent again and again separated from the municipality of Girona.
Population development in the city of Salt
The population of Salt grew from 2,000 to over 20,000 in the twentieth century and is now the most densely populated region in the Girona community (4249 people per km², according to data from 2004). The main cause was the flourishing textile industry. With the influx of workers from Andalusia and Extremadura, the population rose from 7,077 to 11,467 between 1960 and 1970. By the beginning of the century, the population rose further to 22,017 due to a further influx of workers from Morocco (4852 inhabitants), Gambia (1780) and Latin America. Due to the not insignificant migration of the local population and the influx of foreign workers, the number of residents with foreign citizenship has increased from 10% (2000) to 43% (2010), especially in the last ten years - according to the daily El País .
