Salt Cay is the second largest island in the Turks Islands and is part of the British overseas territory of the Turks and Caicos Islands .

The island is flat, has a triangular shape and is 6.74 km² in size. The district of the same name includes other uninhabited islands, such as Cotton Cay , and has a total area of ​​9.1 km². 108 people live on the island ( 2012 census ), the main town is Balfour Town .

In the north of the island is the Salt Cay Airport , which is served several times a week with scheduled flights from Providenciales and Grand Turk Island .

The Turks were inhabited by Arawak Indians until they were abducted by the Spaniards . Settlers came to Salt Cay from Bermuda in the 17th century . They began with the production of salt in seawater salines , which gave the island its current name. Salt production was an important industry until the 20th century, in 1845 676 people lived on Salt Cay. Today tourism is the main industry, especially diving and whale watching .
