Sam Salz (born March 12, 1894 in Radomyśl Wielki , Galicia , † March 21, 1981 in New York City ) was an American art dealer , art collector and patron .

Life

Sam Salz was born in Radomysl Wielki, Galicia, in 1894. At the age of 17 he went to Vienna to study painting and art history at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . During the First World War he served in the Austrian army . After the war, Salz went to Paris to resume his art studies. After a short time he gave up this plan and began to work in the art trade. He made friends with the art dealer Gaston Bernheim-Jeune and worked for Ambroise Vollard .

In the early 1920s, Salz opened a gallery in Cologne and sold works by Marc Chagall , Hans Arp , Georges Braque and James Ensor . From 1926 to 1930 he worked in Brussels and then worked in Paris and London until the late 1930s. He acquired works of art directly from artists such as André Derain , Maurice de Vlaminck , Édouard Vuillard , Pierre Bonnard and got to know the painters Chaim Soutine , Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse personally. During this time, Sam Salz created various portraits, such as a watercolor by James Ensor, a pastel by Édouard Vuillard and a photograph by August Sander .

After Salz visited the United States for the first time in 1936, he settled entirely in New York in 1938 . After the Second World War he was involved in the repatriation of stolen works of art. Back in New York, he began to specialize in the art of impressionism . From then on he sold works of art by Pierre-Auguste Renoir , Paul Cézanne , Edgar Degas , Camille Pissarro , Claude Monet , Édouard Manet , Alfred Sisley and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec . He did not use a gallery, but instead invited potential buyers to his private home on 76th Street, where he also showed visitors his private art collection.

His clients included museums and renowned collectors such as Albert C. Barnes , Paul Mellon , Henry Ford II , David Rockefeller and William S. Paley . There were also personalities from film such as Greta Garbo , Orson Welles , Billy Wilder , Kirk Douglas and Edward G. Robinson . Other customers were Erich Maria Remarque , who is a friend of salt, and the pianist Vladimir Horowitz . Salt was also friends with Diego Rivera .

He donated works of art to several institutions. The Israel Museum in Jerusalem received a graphic from Paul Gauguin , the Louvre in Paris Édouard Manet's painting The Asparagus , the Art Institute of Chicago the painting Virgin and Child with Saint Elizabeth and John the Baptist as a child by Jacques Blanchard , the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York Claude Monet's painting Oak in the Fontainebleau Forest and the Museum of Modern Art, the painting Dinner and drawings by Édouard Vuillard and the sculpture The Serf by Henri Matisse . In addition, the White House in Washington received the painting The Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, July 4, 1776 by Charles Édouard Armand-Dumaresq for its art collection .

Salz was married to the dancer Marina Franca for the first time. The sons Marc and Andre come from this marriage. His second marriage was to Janet Reisner Traeger. He died in New York in 1981 at the age of 87.
