The Nicolás de Piérola district is located in the Camaná Province in the Arequipa region in southwest Peru . The district was founded on November 3rd, 1944. The district was named after Nicolás Fernández de Piérola Flores del Campo, a Peruvian politician, doctor and scientist of the 19th century.

The Nicolás de Piérola district has an area of ​​391 km². The 2017 census counted 7,106 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 5301, in 2007 it was 6065. The district administration is located in the 15  m high town of San Gregorio with 4532 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Gregorio is 5.5 km north of the provincial capital Camaná . The national road 1S ( Panamericana ) runs along the southwestern district border.

Geographical location

The Nicolás de Piérola district is located in the central north of the Camaná province. The Río Camaná flows through the district over a length of about 40 km in a predominantly southwestern direction. Irrigated agriculture is practiced along the course of the river. Otherwise the area consists of uninhabited desert landscape.

The district Nicolás de Piérola borders in the west on the district Mariscal Cáceres , in the north on the districts Chuquibamba ( province Condesuyos ) and Uraca ( province Castilla ), in the east on the district Majes ( province Caylloma ), in the south on the district Samuel Pastor as well in the southwest to the José María Quimper district .
