Savage Thrust was an American speed and thrash metal band from New York City , New York that was formed in 1984 and disbanded in 1992.

history

The band was formed in November 1984 on Staten Island , at which time it was still a cover band that played songs by Judas Priest and Iron Maiden . From the summer of 1985 the band was run independently. The line-up initially consisted of singer Michael "Mike" Smith, guitarists Edmund "Ed" Varuolo and Pat Donofrio, bassist Kenny Mezzacappa and drummer Bobby Boch. In the same year, Mezzacappa was replaced by Jim "Jimmy" Gellentien. 1985 also appeared with Demo of Doom, a first demo recording , of which the song Crown of Thorns was used for the 1986 sampler Speed Metal Hell II by New Renaissance Records . Around 1,500 units separated from the demo. The band made their first appearance in July 1985. For April 1986 the band planned to release the EP Metal the Painful Way . Instead, in 1987, in addition to the Demo Live Pain , which consists of five live recordings, the single But Soon Revenge was released via Polydisc Records , which includes the song Agony & Extacy in addition to the title song . In the same year, Frank Conti joined the team as the new bass player, who was replaced by roadie Mike Puch in the same year . Through the fanzine Heavy Metal Subterraneo , the band was able to play in Mexico in March 1989 as the first foreign metal band and could be seen for 40 minutes in the TV show Musica sin fronteras . At the end of 1989 the guitarist Donofrio left the line-up and was replaced by Rob Antilla, before the singer Smith left the formation in early 1990. Shortly afterwards, in May, the Mexican label Avanzada Metalica released their debut album Eat 'Em Raw . Around 5,000 copies of this were sold. In 1991 the group recorded three more demos, with Antilla also taking over the vocals. In May 1992 the band played their last gig in the same club where their first took place. In the summer of 2000 the band got together for a single gig in Brooklyn , in which Varuolo was not involved, however, as he had not had time to rehearse and had not played for a long time. In 2001 two more concerts were held. In their career, the band performed with Anthrax , Exodus , Overkill , Manowar , Armored Saint , Nuclear Assault , MOD , Fates Warning , White Zombie , the Ramones , Voivod , Vio-lence , Carnivore , Hades , Primal Scream , Whiplash , TT Quick , Blessed Death , Insaniac , Faith or Fear , Anvil Bitch , Mucky Pup , Jersey Dogs , At War , Blood Feast , Demolition Hammer , Gothic Slam , School of Violence , Sheer Terror , Transmetal , Six Beer , Social Disorder , Cities and Prowler on. In 2016, the debut album was re-released via High Roller Records .

style

In Metal Hammer , a comparison was made to Razor due to Smith's rough and sometimes high-pitched voice , whereby the band “stands out from the Death Metal scene despite all the harshness”. Mirco Szymyslik from voicesfromthedarkside.de wrote in his review of Eat 'Em Raw that the album is an important one on the thrash metal scene of the east coast of the United States . It gives an important insight into the New York thrash and speed metal scene of the second half of the 1980s. Then there is a wild drumming, with "razor-sharp" riffs and aggressive screams . The band is more like Anthrax than Metallica . He found the singing unpleasant and compared it to that of a neuter or a tortured cat, which was mainly due to the high screams. Ericolabestia from metalpage.de described the group in his review of the album as speed metal with powerful drums in the style of Mortal Sin or Feel the Fire by Overkill .
