Save.TV

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Save.TV is a web-based online service that has been providing registered users with the functionality of a video recorder online since September 2005 . The focus here is on German TV channels. After a 14-day free trial period, the user must choose one of three subscription plans, which are automatically extended for the duration. A free, restricted version was abolished in early September 2010. Save.TV relies on the legal framework for private copying . The official forum was closed at the end of March 2016, and since then several members have set up a new forum. Save.TV has been offline since April 27, 2020 due to a hacker attack.

recording

After registration, the user can select programs from a variety of TV channels that he would like to record. The selection is made via an editorially supervised electronic television program or via search. The user can also find out which programs are currently being recorded most by other users and, for example, can program all episodes of a series for recording with a single click. The prerequisite for this is that there is still space in the private recording area. The recording capacity is 50 hours in the basic tariff, and unlimited in the XL tariff. All recordings are automatically deleted after 30 days, regardless of the tariff. Recordings can be programmed up to four weeks in advance. The program for the next and previous four weeks can be viewed in the electronic television program.

Registered users can also program the recordings and access the video archive using apps for Windows, Android, iOS and Kindle devices. There has also been a simple recording interface from TVgenial for many years .

After the two-week trial period, the service becomes chargeable. The user can choose between a basic tariff and an XL tariff, each of which is offered with a 3-, 6- and 12-month term. The XL tariff is also offered with a 24-month term. An XXL tariff is also offered, which offers an extended range of functions. The costs are between € 7 and € 16.50 per month.

The broadcasts recorded via satellite television can be downloaded or streamed directly from the servers . The legal situation of the service is unclear.

In the basic packages, the recordings are made available in AVI format with the following quality up to summer 2016: Resolution: 720 × 576 pixels, video bit rate: 1100 kbps (VBR), audio bit rate: 128 kbps (VBR). The XL and XXL tariffs also offer the option of recording in MP4 format in H.264 HQ quality (resolution: 1024 × 576, video bit rate: 1500 kbps, audio bit rate: 128 kbps) or H.264 mobile quality (Resolution: 480 × 270, video bit rate: 500 kbps (VBR), audio bit rate: 128 kbps). A cutting list is also offered for this format, which removes lead times and postage times as well as advertising before streaming or downloading. Since June 2014, programs in HD resolution (1280 × 720) have also been available in the XL tariff as part of a beta phase. The beta phase ended on February 5, 2015; Since then, the Save.TV download manager and its successor Save.TV Herbie for Windows HD can be selected as the standard format.

Alternatively, the advertising can be cut out with the free “Cutbutler” program. For this purpose, users exchange cutting lists, for example via the "save-werbefrei.de" database.

Legal

In a judgment of April 22, 2009, the Federal Court of Justice ruled that Internet-based video recorders are permitted under certain circumstances, provided it is ensured that they do not infringe the copyright or transmission rights of the television broadcasters. In the case of commercial providers, it must therefore be ensured that the process is fully automated and that each customer records their own copy. A lawsuit by RTL against providers of web-based video recorders was referred back to the courts of appeal for individual examination. Save.TV claims to meet these requirements. On July 12, 2011 the Dresden Higher Regional Court confirmed that Save.TV did not violate the right of reproduction with its film recordings on behalf of the customers.

Following a lawsuit by ProSiebenSat1 Media AG, the Munich District Court I decided on August 9, 2012 that Save.TV would no longer be allowed to offer broadcasts from the media group for recording. The broadcasters 'rights would be infringed and the service should not be operated without the broadcasters' license, the court ruled (Az .: 7 O 26557/11). Nevertheless, Save.TV still offers ProSiebenSat1 Media AG's programs for recording (as of January 2013). Save.TV pointed out in a statement dated August 13, 2012 in its official forum that the judgment was not yet final and that a written justification for the judgment was not yet available. In addition, the Federal Court of Justice would make a final decision on the question of retransmission rights in proceedings that were accepted for revision.
