The Schönwipfel , also Achomitzer Berg , Italian Monte Acomizza , Slovenian Zahomec , is a 1,813  m high summit of the eastern Carnic main ridge near Feistritz an der Gail and Tarvis .

Location and landscape

The beautifully formed triangular pyramid lies between Gailtal and Kanaltal on the Austrian - Italian border, about 10 kilometers west of the end of the mountain range near Thörl-Maglern .

The Grasberg rises just above the tree line . To the west below is the Achowitzer Alm  ( 1712  m above sea level ) on the ridge, which runs from there gently northwest over the Maria Schnee mountain church and the Feistritzer Alm to the Oisternig  ( 2052  m above sea level ). To the east, the main ridge goes to the Bartolosattel  ( 1173  m above sea level ) and on to the Kapinberg  ( 1735  m above sea level ). To the south lies the Cima Muli (Mulikopf,  1743  m slm ). There follows the Mirnig  ( 1379  m above sea level ) to the southwest, the ridge runs to Camporosso in Valcanale and the Sella di Camporosso (Saifnitz pass) of the Canal Valley to the southwest .

Politically, the summit belongs to the Carinthian municipality of Hohenthurn , and to Tarvisio in Friuli . The name Achomitzer Berg / Monte Acomizza comes from the place Achomitz (Zahomec) near Feistritz, and distinguishes it from the slightly higher Schönwipfel / Cima Bella near Vorderberg, 6 kilometers further west.

On the north flank, directly at the Achowitzer Alm, the Feistritzbach rises towards the Gail , a tributary of the Drau to the Danube . In the southeast, the Torrente Staritamer goes to Torrente Bartolo (Bartolobach), which goes over the Slizza / Gailitz to the Gail. To the southwest the Rio Filza goes into the Valle di Ugovizza , and flows into the Fella at Ugovizza ; this flows over the Tagliamento into the Adriatic Sea . The summit thus belongs to the Mediterranean – Black Sea watershed, the main watershed of south-eastern Europe: This branches off from the main European watershed in western Switzerland at the Lunghin pass west of Maloja , and runs for around 300 kilometers on the main Alpine ridge and then largely from South Tyrol on the Carnic main ridge exactly eastwards, until it turns southeast here at the Schönwipfel, and pulls through the Julian Alps of Slovenia into the Dinarides of the Balkans, and after a further 1200 kilometers ends on the Bosporus .

Ascent

The mountain can be easily climbed from all sides and valley locations. The Karnische Höhenweg  (403), here also the Südalpenweg  (03), Kärntner Grenzweg  (KGW) and Via Alpina passes over the Maria Schnee chapel, which is protected as a monument and past the Achowitzer Alm to Feistritz .
