Schemchuschny ( Russian Жемчужный ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Khakassia ( Russia ) with 811 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located about 120 km as the crow flies northwest of the republic capital Abakan in the steppe landscape on the west bank of the outflowless salt lake Schira . Three kilometers to the west of the village is the Itkul lake, which also has no outflow but has fresh water and is also used to supply Shemchushny with drinking water.
Shemchuschny belongs to the Shira Raion and is about 12 km to the east from its administrative center Shira . The village of Kolodesny adjoins the settlement immediately to the southwest.

history
The place was founded in 1897 as a seaside resort. In the 1970s in particular, it was developed into a resort of regional importance ("Kurort Schira") and in 1976 received the status of an urban-type settlement. The name is derived from the Russian words shemchug ( жемчуг ) or shemchuschina ( жемчужина ) for ' pearl ' .

Attractions
Due to its location on Lake Shiraz and in the vicinity of other lakes, Schemchuschny is a recreational, climatic and balneological health resort of regional importance with several sanatoriums. Shira and Itkul lakes are part of the Chakasischen Sapowedniks , a nature reserve set up in 1999 on the basis of already existing protected areas, a total of almost 270,000 hectares.
Infrastructure
The road that connects the M54 Krasnoyarsk - Abakan - Kyzyl - Mongolian border with the district center of Shira, runs through Schemchuschny . The nearest train station is also located in Shira on the Achinsk - Abakan railway line.
