In the 1970s in particular, it was developed into a resort of regional importance ("Kurort Schira") and in 1976 received the status of an urban-type settlement. The name is derived from the Russian words shemchug ( жемчуг ) or shemchuschina ( жемчужина ) for ' pearl ' .
