Sebastian Weidner was elected mayor of Herchenhain in 1877 and was re-elected three times (1886, 1895, 1904). During his tenure as mayor, he tried to help his ailing community, including by trying to set up a paper and cigar factory. On the other hand, his proposal to resettle most of the agricultural population of Herchenhain near Nidda , in the area of ​​today's district of Harb , was rejected because of the lower yields .

From 1896 until his death, Sebastian Weidner was a member of the second chamber of the state estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. Together with his Upper Hessian co-members Heinrich Schmalbach ( Crainfeld ) and Wilhelm Erk (Nidda), he campaigned for the further construction of the Vogelsbergbahn between Lauterbach and Gedern .

His son Ernst Weidner also became a member of the state parliament for a short time after the First World War and a member of the advisory state committee after the Second World War .
