Sergio Cardinal Obeso Rivera (born October 31, 1931 in Xalapa , Mexico , † August 11, 2019 in Coatepec , Mexico) was a Mexican clergyman and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church . He was Archbishop of Jalapa and Chairman of the Mexican Bishops' Conference .

Life

Sergio Obeso Rivera, the sixth of nine children, entered the seminary in 1944. He studied philosophy in Mexico and from 1947 theology at the Pontifical Latin American College "Pius" in Rome. On October 31, 1954 he received in Rome by Octaviano Márquez y Toriz , Archbishop of Puebla de los Angeles , the priesthood for the Archdiocese Veracruz-Jalapa . He received his doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1955 he returned to Xalapa and worked for several years in the seminary as prefect of the philosophy department, spiritual director and teacher for philosophical affairs. Archbishop Manuel Pío López Estrada appointed him rector of the seminary.

Pope Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Papantla on April 30, 1971 . The Archbishop of Jalapa, Emilio Abascal y Salmerón , gave him episcopal ordination on June 21 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Manuel Pío López Estrada , Archbishop of Jalapa, and Guillermo Ranzahuer González , Bishop of San Andrés Tuxtla .

On January 15, 1974 he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of Jalapa and titular archbishop pro hac vice of Uppenna , and on February 28 of the same year he was appointed to the office. With the death of Emilio Abascal y Salmerón on March 12, 1979, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Jalapa. On April 10, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

In the consistory of June 28, 2018, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Leone I in the college of cardinals . On July 1, 2018, he took possession of his titular church.

Sergio Obeso Rivera was chairman of the Mexican Bishops' Conference from 1982 to 1988 and 1994 to 1997. He was involved in numerous initiatives for peace and reconciliation negotiations in Mexico and was included in the 1996 San Andrés Agreement, which was negotiated between the government and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation ( Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional ; EZLN). He was the initiator of the canonization of Rafael Guízar Valencia , the patron saint of Mexican bishops, and the beatification of Ángel Darío Acosta Zurita .
