share is a German consumer goods brand with products in the areas of food , beverages and personal care . Based on the “ 1 + 1 principle ” (also known as the “buy-one-give-one” principle), an equivalent product or service is donated for each share product.

history

Share was founded in 2017 by Sebastian Stricker, Iris Braun, Ben Unterkofler and Tobias Reiner. The idea builds on the donation initiative of the UN World Food Program ShareTheMeal founded by Stricker .

In March 2018, the first share products were sold, in addition to the start in the online shop through a cooperation with Rewe and dm in over 5,000 branches in Germany. It was the biggest launch of a social consumer goods brand in Germany. Bitburger Holding invested 1 million euros in 2019 , and cooperations with Aral and Eurowings followed . Since the end of 2019, share has also been sold in dm, Merkur and Billa branches in Austria. Share has been cooperating with Shell and Deutsche Bahn as a sales partner since 2020 ; in June 2020 the brand launched in dm branches in the Czech Republic and, among other things, supports the local food banks with food donations.

Products

In addition to the launch products mineral , organic nut bars and hand soap , the company now also sells flavored water , milk substitutes , organic chocolate , organic trail mix , and bamboo - toothbrushes , staple foods such as rice, pasta and flour, as well as shower gel and hand cream.

donate

Share invests around 7% of sales in social projects. In the first year, the start-up sold over 8 million products, thereby financing the construction or repair of 51 wells in Liberia, Cambodia and Ethiopia, as well as the distribution of 2 million meals and 550,000 soaps in national and international aid programs. To this end, share works with aid organizations such as the United Nations World Food Program , Action Against Hunger , Caritas Austria , Welthungerhilfe and Tafel Deutschland eV . In the meantime, more than 30 million aid has been financed with the sale of share products.

reception

The start-up received a lot of attention in the German press for its social entrepreneurship model and an innovation in the packaging sector , the first mineral water bottle made from 100 percent recycled waste plastic on the German market.

A few months after the launch, share was certified as a B Corporation and in 2019 was named “Best for the World” B Corp in the “Community” category. This makes share one of the 10% of companies that provide the greatest benefit to the community worldwide.

Kathrin Krause from the Federation of German Consumer Organizations , however, criticized the fact that Share does not change the causes of hunger or the price pressure that retailers exert on their producers. Overall, however, the reception is mostly positive. Melchior Poppe from Focus Online particularly emphasizes the holistic approach of share - in the ecological as well as in the social context: "Sustainability all along the line, so - affordable and with positive effects for everyone."

Burkhard Wilke, managing director of the German Central Institute for Social Issues, criticized a “certain lack of transparency” at share, as the exact amount of the donation was not indicated on the product. Since autumn 2018 share has been showing the donation amount for the respective product online. A QR code on the product packaging gives the consumer direct access to the project information.
