Sheldon is a small town (with the status " City ") in O'Brien County , and to a lesser extent in Sioux County in the US -amerikanischen State Iowa . In 2010 Sheldon had 5188 residents, the number of which had decreased to 5093 by 2013.
The city was briefly mentioned in two literary works: in Jack Kerouac's On the Road (1957) (dt .: the way ) and Tim O'Brien If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home (1973) .

Sheldon is located in northwest Iowa on the Floyd River , a left tributary of the Missouri . The intersection of the three states of Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota is located on the Big Sioux River and is 93 km northwest of Sheldon. After Nebraska , there are 96 km to the southwest.
The geographical coordinates of Sheldon are 43 ° 10'52 "north latitude and 95 ° 51'22" west longitude. The urban area extends over an area of 11.65 km² and is distributed over the Floyd and Carroll Townships of O'Brien County and the Grant Township of Sioux County.

The four-lane Iowa Highway 60 runs along the Sheldon city limits as an eastern and southern bypass. On the eastern outskirts of the city, the IA 60 crosses US Highway 18 , which runs from there in a westerly direction as the main road through the center of the city. All other roads are subordinate country roads, some unpaved roads and inner-city connecting roads.
In a north-south direction a railroad line for the freight traffic of the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) runs through the urban area of Sheldon and meets here a line coming from the east of the SOO Line Railroad belonging to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) .
The Sheldon Municipal Airport is located 4 km north-northeast of the center of Sheldon, a small airport for general aviation and air taxi traffic . The nearest commercial airports are the Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City (108 km southwest) and the Sioux Falls Regional Airport (112 km northwest).

Sheldon was founded in 1872 and named after the railroad worker Israel Sheldon . In 1876 the settlement was incorporated as an independent municipality.
