The Phoenix de Sherbrooke ( English Sherbrooke Phoenix ) are a Canadian ice hockey franchise from Sherbrooke in the province of Québec . The team was founded on May 31, 2011 and will play from the 2012/13 season in one of the three highest Canadian junior ice hockey leagues , the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec (LHJMQ). The team plays in the 4,176-seat Palais des Sports Léopold-Drolet . The team colors are navy blue, light blue and beige.
history
The Lewiston MAINEiacs had been relocated from Sherbrooke to Lewiston in the US state of Maine in 2003 , which meant that the city was no longer represented in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec . The MAINEiacs had a successful period before they were bought out by the league for $ 3.5 million due to financial difficulties after the 2010-11 season . For the 2011/12 season , the game was therefore stopped and the number of teams in the LHJMQ fell to 17 participants.
At the same time, the league management awarded the license to the city of Sherbrooke. On November 24, 2011, Team President Denis Bourque announced that the franchise would be named Phoenix . The officials deliberately gave the team a nickname in English , as a smaller junior team with the French nickname Phénix already exists in the city .
